Customer complaint:
“Think it’s got a bit of a short circuit mate.”

Opened the battery box on this 2016 Scania R450 and found one battery trying to recreate a small chemical explosion.

Cause turned out to be the starter motor internally shorting and arcing heavily under load.

No complicated fault finding.
No mystery CAN issues.
No ECU drama.

Just brutal current draw and two batteries getting absolutely abused.

Sometimes the simplest faults create the biggest mess.

When the neighbours find out you’ve got an aircon machine… 🙃❄️

No, we don’t normally do cars.
Yes, somehow we still ended up recharging the neighbour’s BMW on the driveway.

KWS TruckTech specialises in HGV diagnostics, truck electrical diagnostics, AdBlue faults, CAN network issues and mobile truck ADAS calibration across Yorkshire and surrounding areas.

You know the day is going to be long when you’re greeted with: “previous repairs by other techs” 👀

2011 MAN TGL arrived with:

❌ Flashing N
❌ Gearbox ECU malfunction
❌ CAN communication faults everywhere
❌ Half the dashboard removed already
❌ More wiring than a small power station

Started with gearbox faults. Ended up chasing power feeds, hydraulic pressure and a loom that had clearly been “improved” by several generations of enthusiastic electricians.

Modern truck diagnostics isn’t just plugging in a computer. Half the job is figuring out what the truck fault is. The other half is figuring out what humans did to it beforehand.

Proper diagnostics first. Parts cannon later.

Another DAF in with us for injector coding today.

Should have been a quick in-and-out job, but the ECU had other ideas. Midway through coding, power supply became unstable and the ECU started dropping out during the write process.

After tracking down the issue and restoring stable voltage, injector coding completed successfully and truck running as it should again.

Programming modern HGVs is no longer just “plug laptop in and press a button”. Stable power supply is absolutely critical during any coding or programming work.

One small voltage issue can create some very large headaches.

SCANIA EMISSIONS FAULT? DON’T TRUST THE FIRST ANSWER.

2015 Scania R410 in with emissions issues and DPF/regeneration problems.

Previous work included replacing parts and chasing the usual suspects:

✔️ NOx sensor replaced
✔️ Fault investigation started around aftertreatment system
✔️ Regen issues present

At first glance the numbers looked odd, but something didn’t add up.

Live data showed the DPF differential pressure sitting at 53 mbar constantly.

Engine running? 53 mbar
Engine OFF? 53 mbar
Pressure pipes disconnected? Still 53 mbar

Physics had apparently taken the day off.

Soot load was only around 28%, pressure barely changed with RPM, yet the readings suggested a restriction that simply wasn’t there.

Result? Fault traced to a failed DPF differential pressure sensor giving a false reading, leading the system down the wrong path.

This is exactly why proper diagnostics matter. Fault codes and parts darts only get expensive.

Finding the real fault, not just the symptoms.

It’s nice working in a clean, level and well-lit workshop… but anyone can calibrate ADAS there.

The real challenge is providing mobile ADAS calibration on-site, at the customer’s premises, after a triggering event such as a windscreen replacement, accident repair or suspension work. That’s where we come in.

This Scania came in today for a front camera calibration following a windscreen replacement. Initial checks showed the camera was sitting 7 degrees out of alignment. Calibration completed on-site in the customer’s yard and everything set back to manufacturer specification.

No dealer delays. No unnecessary downtime. Just proper mobile HGV ADAS calibration done where the truck actually is.

2020 Actros MP5 speed limit change🫣

While Jaltest is usually our go-to tool for most diagnostics work, there are still certain functions that aftermarket diagnostics simply won’t touch.

This 2020 Mercedes Actros with CPC5 was hard-coded to an 82km/h speed limit. Jaltest could read the parameter perfectly, but wouldn’t allow changes because it’s stored as a manufacturer “legal limit” setting. Normally that means dealer-only access.

Not for us though 👀

Using specialist engineering tools, we were able to access the CPC5 directly and return the limiter back to 90km/h without needing Mercedes involvement.

Modern truck diagnostics is no longer just fault code reading. Different jobs require different tools, and knowing when to step outside the standard diagnostic software is half the battle.

And yes… technically it would let us set it to 250km/h 🫣
Probably best not to test that in a fully loaded Actros. Physics tends to get involved at that point.

Scania in today for a mobile AirCon regas. System checked for leaks before filling. Topped up with gas & oil to manufacturers specs. We use specific oil with UV dye, so if there are any leaks in the future, they can be easily spotted. Back to freezing cold!
