Day 6: Today we conclude our video series Women Behind the Wheel at Bristol Community Ferry Boats.
We are delighted to be playing our part in celebrating the contribution of Women in Maritime and believe we are 'setting an example'.
Women make up just 2% of seafarers around the world and 19% of the total global maritime workforce.
But at Bristol Community Ferry Boats, 49% of the leading roles are held by women.
Now that is something to be proud of.

Welcome to Day 2 of our celebration of Women Behind the Wheel at Bristol Community Ferry Boats.
This week we are taking yesterday's International Day for Women in Maritime as an opportunity to showcase the talents, and stories, of some of the amazing women who help to keep our iconic ferry services running.
By continuing to challenge traditional stereotypes and highlighting the joys of working on the water, the women behind the wheel, and in the workshop, are a powerful demonstration that the maritime industry is open to all.

18/05/2026

Today we celebrate International Day for Women in Maritime by turning the spotlight on our own amazing women who are breaking down barriers and helping to shape the future of the industry.
While women make up less than 20% of the global maritime workforce - and just 2% of seafarers around the world - at Bristol Community Ferry Boats the percentage of women in leading roles is 49%!
In the coming days we will be showcasing the stories of our skippers, training manager, workshop co-ordinator, co-directors and crew as they describe, in their own words, life for a woman working in the maritime industry.
Not to be missed!
We salute all women in the maritime industry and the huge contribution they are making to challenging traditional stereotypes and blazing a trail for others to follow.
