Hauliers up and down the country are unimpressed with HMRC’s changes to driver's overnight allowances.

For the past 26 years, under the RHA/HMRC agreement lorry drivers who have to spend a night away in their sleeper cab can claim an overnight allowance.

This is currently £26.20, which is to cover personal expenses such as meals and upkeep of bedding.

However, from 6 April HMRC will be allowed to conduct spot checks to check the validity of claims.

This means that lorry drivers will have to get receipts for any expense incurred.

The RHA think that this change is completely unnecessary and can’t be properly enforced.

RHA Director of Policy Jack Semple says: “HMRC has repeatedly misled the RHA and the industry over the issue of the overnight allowance. There is no legal or common-sense requirement for the change it is insisting on making.

“We repeat our call to the current exchequer secretary, Jane Ellison, to listen to the powerful argument of the industry - and the logic of this new consultation - and to stop the change required by HMRC from next month.”

Do you think HMRC should make these changes to driver's overnight allowances? Let us know in the comments.
