Recent Birmingham Road News Taxi Drivers Should Know

Staying up to date with road changes is essential for every Birmingham taxi driver — whether you’re PHV or Hackney. Here’s a full breakdown of the most important updates from the past couple of months that could affect your routes, journey times, and compliance:

📸 1. Broad Street Bus Lane Enforcement is Now Live

Birmingham City Council has activated ANPR camera enforcement on Broad Street.
Important points for drivers:
• Private Hire Vehicles are NOT allowed in some sections of the bus lane.
• Hackney carriages ARE permitted in legally marked taxi lanes — but signs must be followed carefully.
• Fines are £70 if paid late (discounted to £35 if paid early).
• Enforcement is active 24/7, and cameras are already issuing penalties.

If you work city centre evenings, weekends, or during events — be extra cautious around Broad Street.

↩️ 2. Kings Heath Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) – Phase Expansion

The Kings Heath LTN has entered its next phase, affecting multiple roads.

Here’s what’s changing:
• New one-way systems across several residential streets
• Additional modal filters, restricting cut-through traffic
• More 20mph zones to slow overall speeds and improve safety
• Changes to how you pick up from residential addresses in the area

These updates will affect navigation, especially during school times and evenings. Routes may take longer or require diversions.

🚲 3. A45 Coventry Road – Cycle Route Expansion Plans

The council is continuing with plans to install a segregated cycle lane on parts of the A45.

What this means for taxi drivers:
• Possible reduction of road width for vehicles
• New traffic-calming measures
• Changes to lane layout in the future
• Potential impact during construction phases

Expect delays during peak hours and be prepared for route adjustments.

Common Questions Drivers Ask Us – Answered

We get a lot of questions from drivers every day. Here are some of the most common ones — and the answers to help you stay on top of the latest licensing information:

Q: How long are applications taking right now?
A: Birmingham City Council is currently processing applications with delays, renewals are getting processed 1-2 weeks before the expiry date and new plates should expect delays around 1 week.

Q: When should I renew my badge or vehicle licence?
A: We recommend starting 10 weeks before your expiry date to avoid delays or downtime, send your documents and we’ll do the rest.

Q: Can I use a keeper slip?
A: Yes — a keeper slip is accepted.
If you don’t have a logbook or keeper slip and you only have an invoice, the council will issue a 2-month temporary plate.

Q: How do I book my DBS or Medical?
A: We can guide you with links, booking details, and full support through the process.

Q: What if I’m not sure what application type to choose?
A: Send us a message — we’ll confirm the correct form and complete it for you.

What are the age limits for Birmingham vehicles?
A:
• Private Hire – New licence: Vehicle must be under 8 years old.
• Private Hire – Renewal: Vehicle must be under 12 years old.
• Hackney Carriage: Vehicle must be under 15 years old.

Age limits apply to the vehicle’s first registration date.

Q: Is a rear plate required on all Birmingham taxis?
A: Yes — all Hackney and Private Hire vehicles must display the rear plate at all times while working. As of now we have been advised that they have no door stickers in stock so when picking up your plates, you will not be given any stickers and will not be pulled over if stickers are not displayed, if you currently have them on please leave them on.

Q: Can I change my vehicle mid-licence?
A: Yes — but the licence cannot be transferred over to you the new vehicle, you will have to put in a new licence application.

Q: Can someone else drive my licensed vehicle?
A: Only if they hold a valid Birmingham badge.
Unlicensed drivers cannot drive a plated taxi — even for personal use. The other driver will have to be added onto the insurance and it will have to sent to the council.

Important: Badge Renewal Guidance for Birmingham Taxi Drivers

If your badge is due for renewal, now is the time to get prepared. Many drivers lose working days because they apply too late or make small mistakes that cause delays.

Remember: Birmingham City Council will ONLY renew your badge up to the expiry date of your DBS or Medical.
If either one expires sooner, your badge will only be issued until that date — not the full 3 years.

🕒 To avoid delays, we recommend starting your renewal 10 weeks before your expiry date.

Common mistakes that delay Birmingham City Council taxi applications

Many drivers experience delays because of avoidable errors. Here are the issues we see most often:

❌ Expired insurance uploaded

❌ MOT and Inspection report not within the 10-week period

❌ Vehicle age limits not checked
• New vehicles cannot be licensed after 8 years (PHV)
• Renewals cannot be licensed after 12 years (PHV)
• Hackney carriages cannot be licensed after 15 years

❌ Not all pages of the logbook (V5C) sent
You must provide both the front page and the second page showing owner/keeper details.

❌ Incorrect or unclear documents
Blurry or cut-off images cause immediate delays.

❌ Logbook or insurance not matching the driver
If the insurance is in another name, you need to provide a statement of fact or insurer confirmation.

❌ Applying too close to your licence expiry date

❌ Wrong application type selected
Always ensure you’re submitting the correct form for Driver or Vehicle.

We help drivers avoid these mistakes and submit everything correctly the first time, avoiding any delays in your application and allowing you to stay on the road.
