🚛Getting your lorry licence? Here’s how the 3A and 3B tests actually work! 🚛👇
There’s a lot of confusion out there about how practical HGV testing is structured, so let’s clear it up.
When you start your practical training, you'll be out driving on public roads right from day one. You don’t need to pass any yard tests just to go out training on the highway.
But when it comes to the actual exams, the Module 3A test is your first major milestone.
The 3A is the off-road portion (covering the 'S' shape reverse into a bay, and the trailer uncouple/recouple if you're doing Class 1). The rule is simple: You must pass the 3A before you can take your 3B on-road test.
The best part? Your training provider handles all the logistics and booking behind the scenes, so you’ll usually tackle the 3A right in the middle of your training week.
Once you smash the reversing pad and get that 3A pass certificate, it’s a massive weight off your shoulders. It means you can head into your final 3B road test completely focused on traffic, roundabouts, and road safety.
It’s all about building that precision and muscle memory so you're ready for the real world!
To the experienced drivers out there—honestly, how many shunts did it take you to nail the reversing pad during your training week? Let us know below! 👇
