Leopoldstrasse is the main street of the former artists' quarter Schwabing.

The street between Münchener Freiheit and Victory Gate is nowadays the promenade of Munich people, a place to see and to be seen. 47 open air cafés and restaurants along the street invite you to sit outdoors. Sit down, watch the people and enjoy the Schwabing atmosphere.

The area around Leopoldstrasse is also in the cold season a place of entertainment. In the side streets east of Münchener Freiheit (Occam-, Feilitzsch-, Sieges-, Marktstrasse) a amusement quarter with more than 30 pubs and bars is located - some with live music.

History
Around 1000 years ago a group of Benedictine monks established a small settlement on the Petersberg hill. They called the settlement "Ze den Munichen", literally "to the monks". Accordingly, Munich's coat of arms today bears the image of a child in a monk's habit, the "Münchner Kindl". However it was a bold act of Henry the Lion, the Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, that Munich became a marketplace and later a city. In 1156 the profitable toll bridge at Föhring built by the Bishop of Freising attracted the attention of Duke Henry. This bridge was the only passage over the river Isar in the southern part of Bavaria and an important point of the salt trade road from Reichenhall and Salzburg. Duke Henry burned down the wooden toll bridge at Föhring and built his own bridge at the monk's settlement "Munichen" so that he could collect the tolls. On the foot of the monk's settlement a marketplace was established (today Marienplatz). Bishop Otto of Freising protested to the emperor Frederick Barbarossa. After two years of dispute the emperor sactioned the move of the bridge and confirmed the right to collect toll and to establish a marketplace and mint money. The day of the emperor's decision, 14 June 1158, is looked on as the date of Munich's founding.

The City of Munich will celebrate the 857th anniversary of its founding with a two-days festival for its citizens and visitors. During the two days are offered many attractions, e.g. several stages with perfomances of musicians, dancers and other artists, a craftsmen market and a special area for children.

Saturday 10 am - 11 pm and Sunday 10 am - 10 pm.

HOFBRAUHAUS

The historic beer hall on the first floor of the building is considered the heart of the Hofbräuhaus.
Here, where Hofbräuhaus beer was once brewed, underneath the cross vaults, up to 1,300 guests can sit at tables, some of which have been here since 1897 as testified by the many initials, names and comments engraved on them.
Directly to the left of the main portal is the bar; to the right of the entrance is a smaller room for 70 people. People unfamiliar with the room’s history are surprised by its name: “Stadelheim”, the name of Munich ’s prison.
This room does, in fact, owe its name to the prison. Up until World War II, prison officials, regulars at the Hofbräuhaus, had their own reserved table in this room.
In the center of the public beer hall is a music podium where our own musicians play every day. On weekends, visiting bands provide lively entertainment for our guests.
A Hofbräuhaus rarity, found nowhere else in the world, is the two racks of beer stein safes. These practical storage units were installed in 1970. Encouraged by some of the regular guests who wanted a safe and separate storage space for their personal - and in some cases, very valuable - beer steins, the HB landlord at the time installed a steel rack with lockers for up to 424 stoneware and glass mugs. The wrangling among the regulars to secure one of these boxes with high status-symbol value was - and still continues to be - intense.
The special atmosphere of this institution can be felt in every corner of the beer hall. At the reserved regulars’ tables, guests from all countries of the globe can experience the Bavarian way of life first hand, with its heart and hospitality.

Fünf Höfe
Located in the center of Munich, Fünf Höfe (Five Courtyards) is an architecturally stunning shopping gallery that combines a sleek design of glass and steel with a bevy of posh designer boutiques, specialty shops, cafés, restaurants, and art galleries that offer something for every budget.
Although a popular destination, the space is rarely overcrowded and provides a tranquil oasis for business people on their lunch breaks and shoppers in need of respite from the busy city streets.
Unhurried patrons flip through books at the immense branch of the bookstore Hugendubel, peruse the racks at Zara, Dolce & Gabbana, or Japanese design and clothing store Muji, stop in for tea at Brown’s Tea Bar, or indulge in a fresh salad at Dean and David while relaxing next to a waterfall.
After the stores close, trendy young professionals descend upon Fünf Höfe for after-work cocktails and dinner at Vapiano or Kaimug.
Even if shopping isn’t on the agenda, it’s easy to spend an enjoyable hour or two inside Fünf Höfe, browsing, people-watching, and promenading through the glass halls.

Strong Beer Time in Munich - Bavaria

Strong lent beer had already been served during this period of carneval (March 21st - April 6th, 2014) since the mid 15th century.
Each of the Munich breweries brews its own strong beer which has an alcohol content of above 7% during lent which has such melodious names as:
Delicator (Hofbräuhaus),
Triumphator (Löwenbräu)
Animator (Hacker- Pschorr)
Maximator (Augustiner)
Paulaner monks brewed the famous "Salvator" strong beer and this is the reason why the tapping of the barrel is celebrated in the Salvator cellar at Nockherberg.

Everyone is there who is someone and no politicians are able to escape when it comes to "Derblecken", where politicians have to face their critics. The Märzen beer has been brewed since the October beer festival of 1871. Due to its high original gravity, this beer stays fresh longer than all other beers which were breed before it so that it can only be served during the festival.

Munich in Spring!!!

Spring Festival

If there’s one thing the people of Munich enjoy, it’s partying and any old excuse to throw one will do. That includes having a festival to celebrate each season, and as many as possible in between. And typically, this involves lots of beer drinking (see the Starkbierfest). Munich is celebrating its 40th Frühlingsfest (Spring festival, April 16 - May 2) this year on the famous Theresienwiese, the home of the Oktoberfest.

The Frühlingsfest is almost exactly like the Oktoberfest, but on a smaller, less crazy scale. They have only two big beer tents, in comparison to the Oktoberfest’s 14, and a few thousand people visit it, instead of a few million. They still have an amusement park, live music, fireworks, roasted almonds and pretzels, of course.

In addition, they have a Weissbier beer garden, and in case you can’t decide whether to go on the rides or to drink beer, there’s a revolving Pils carousel, so that you can kill two birds with one stone and get dizzier even quicker than usual. There’s also lots of rides and go-cart racing for the children and a flea market for the ladies on Saturday.

The festival is open from 11:00 - 23:00, Fri, Sat 11:00 - 23:30, Sun 11:00 - 23:00. Metro: Theresienwiese.

WINTER FESTIVAL 2012
November 27th till December 31st, Theresienwiese Munich

Tollwood, one festival, three focuses:
»Upstream« is in an impressive spherical tent called »E-Werk«. Here visitors will find out about the “energy transition” planned in Germany. How much does energy really cost? Where does renewable energy come from? The »E-Werk« at Tollwood shows ways to a future with sunlight, wind and co.

In the »World Salon« top experts from the scientific community, the public sector and the cultural world will concern themselves with those issues that world affairs have placed on our agenda: Guests in the »Weltsalon«-tent in between many others are Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Dr. Auma Obama, Iljia Trojanow and cabaret artist Helmut Schleich.

»4 circuses + 4 cultures«: Czech Republic, Morocco, Colombia and Vietnam – these are the countries where Company Cirk La Putyka/Circo Aereo, Zimmermann & de Perrot/Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger, Circolombia und Lang Toi, come from. They all reflect their different cultures by using different artistic ways to fascinate their audience in their very special arts. Visitors can combine their theatre visit with a four-course bio Christmas dinner.

As good tradition the Tollwood Winter Festival finishes with the legendary New Years Eve Party.
