How often do you check your car coolant(water) level?

Checking the water level everyday before taking your car out is important as it can prevent problems such as your engine overheating and your vehicle breaking down.

Firstly, before you inspect your car’s water system you must ensure the engine is cool or cold. Let it sit for a few hours after driving before you remove the radiator cap, otherwise hot water can spray out, causing burns.

The low and high markings on the side of the plastic overflow bottle connected to the water cooling system tell you if there is enough water in the engine. The water level should be between the two marks. The overflow bottle usually has a brightly coloured cap and is connected to the radiator at the front of the car.

How to check it!

To check the levels, lift your car’s bonnet, and be sure that it’s secured. Then locate your water reservoir, and make sure that the water level is between the minimum and maximum levels.

How regularly do you check your car before going out? One of the important things to check on your car before going out is your engine oil. Engine oil serves the engine by lubricating it's working components so that car works smoothly.

A portion of the engine oil is consumed by the engine itself and sometimes it may leak as the engine ages. This means checking the engine oil level and it's quality should be a weekly practice.

How to do it!!!

Always check your engine oil level and it's quality early in the morning before you start your car.

To conduct the cheque, do the following:

1. Open the bonnet of the car, and find the oil dipstick in your vehicle. It has a rounded end that is used to pull it out of a vehicle and it is found on the engine.

2. Remove the dipstick from its tube and wipe it off with a clean rag or tissue papper. Then insert the stick all the way back into the pipe, and pull it out again.

3. Note how high the oil film reaches on the dipstick (whether it falls beneath “full” or “add”). If the residue doesn’t reach above the “add” line, then it is time for an oil change.

4. Also, check the quality of your oil. If the oil quality is still good, you should be able to rub it between your fingers cleanly. If the oil leaves a dirty smudge or if it smells like gasoline, then you probably need to change it soon, as you are running contaminated oil through your vehicle.
