Back to School: Generalization

Generalization is a big subject, and less often discussed. Here's how generalizing looks when it works:

~A student learns to add fractions in the classroom and can also correctly add fractions when doing homework, on a test, or while cooking at home.

~A student learns to take turns in a board game at recess and also takes turns during group projects, class discussions, and lunchtime games.

~A student learns how to write a persuasive paragraph in language arts and applies the same structure when writing a persuasive letter for a community project.

A student learns to use a checklist to organize tasks in the classroom and then uses a checklist at home to complete chores or study tasks.

When teaching students (and adults) with FASD, it’s important to recognize that skills learned in one context may not automatically transfer to other settings. Because of this, instruction needs to be explicit, repeated, and consistent across environments. It's a big factor in why homework is so hard and we recommend your IEP team consider homework be done in school. Check out these tips when it comes to helping with generalization.
