School Zone Laws and Rules

Speed Limit
30 km/h in school zones
No U-Turns in school zones

School buses:
Stop when red lights are flashing + stop arm out.
All traffic both directions must stop.
No passing other vehicles going the same direction.

Fines in Saskatchewan:
20 km/h over the posted school zone limit = $310 fine
General speeding in school zones starts around $140 and goes up.

Watch for kids walking - many students walk or get dropped off, and winter visibility is low
Bus loading zones get busy - don’t stop in "No Stopping" areas even briefly
Icy or wet roads = increased stopping distance.

In Saskatchewan, passing a school bus with its red flashing lights and extended stop arm active results in a minimum fine of $360 (plus applicable surcharges) and 4 SGI demerit points on your driver's license.

It is important for students to behave while riding a school bus because the driver’s main job is to focus on the road, traffic, weather, and stops β€” not on what’s happening behind them. When students are loud, moving around, or not following rules, it distracts the driver and can make the bus unsafe for everyone. Good behavior means staying seated, using quiet voices, and listening the first time. Discipline at home plays a big role in this. When parents and families teach respect, responsibility, and self-control at home, students bring those habits onto the bus. That helps relieve stress for the driver, because they don’t have to keep looking back or stopping the bus to manage behavior. A calm, respectful bus ride gets everyone to school and home safely, and it shows respect for the driver and for each other.

Bus Safety = Everyone's Job

🚌 Listen to the driver
🚌 Stay seated
🚌 Use inside voices
🚌 Keep the aisle clear

When we behave, we keep everyone safe.
