Iran’s Grip on Hormuz Is Tighter Than Ever

Israel and U.S. strikes have wiped out senior Iranian leaders and hit key targets across the country. But after a month of fighting, it is arguably Iran that has secured the most significant strategic victory: a tightening grip over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

So far in March, the first full month of war, barely six vessels per day on average have traversed the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the world, in either direction. That compares with about 135 a day in normal times, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

Over that time, 80% of the small number of oil tankers exiting the strait have been Iranian or belong to countries with which it is on cordial terms, the figures show.

Update on Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) from various shipping lines. Prices below are in USD and based on TEU which is a 20' container, please double amounts for 40' container.

MSC: 150USD/TEU
CMA: 150USD/TEU
Hapag: 160USD/TEU
Maersk: 200USD/TEU
ZIM: different depending on the area but most affecting our customers is to Israel, which has gone up 210USD for a 40ft container as of right now

Some shipping lines are also adding war surcharges, we will update as the information becomes available.

Update from CMA CGM re Shipments to the Middle East:

As mentioned, ZIM shipments are still proceeding to Israel.

We are closely monitoring what is happening in the Middle East and how it will affect our customers shipments.

Please see below advisory from MSC.

So far with ZIM it is business as usual for shipments to Israel.

Our office is closing at 1:00pm Monday and will most likely be closed until noon Tuesday, we will see what Mother Nature serves up overnight and whether anyone makes it in tomorrow or we work from home.

All Ro/Ro vehicles were delivered to the port on Friday ahead of the bad weather. PSA Port of Halifax has suspended operations from 12:00 today until 13:00 Tuesday.
