There is a lot to be done. Imagine if they worked with us, listened to what we need and respected our opinions. The operators are the ones with millions invested, we deserve a voice. Safety is our priority too.
🚚 Without trucks, Australia stops, but over-regulation is pushing drivers out of the industry
In Parliament I spoke on the Heavy Vehicle National Law bill, and I made it very clear: the issue isn’t just regulation, it’s the way it’s being enforced.
Out here in the North West, we rely on trucks for everything: cattle, groceries, diesel, grain, you name it. But we’re seeing taskforces flown out from the coast, circling trucks like they’re criminals, issuing $800–$2,000 fines for things like a cracked windscreen or a single LED globe blown out after hundreds of kilometers on corrugated roads.
There’s no Windscreens O’Brien in Hughenden, Richmond or Julia Creek.
If your truck gets grounded here, that’s your livelihood gone.
I’ve had drivers tell me:
“You can have the keys. I’ll go drive a loader for council, I’m sick of the fines.”
That’s what’s happening. Drivers are leaving the industry because of the culture of enforcement, not because they don’t care about safety.
Safety matters, but so does common sense.
✅ If you’re shifting drought-stricken cattle and are delayed by crosswinds, you shouldn’t be slapped with fines for going over log book hours.
✅ If officers fly from Brisbane, they should speak with drivers, not just dump a list of faults and walk away.
✅ If we demand roadworthy trucks, then we need truck-worthy roads. Drivers here pay the same rego as a truck on the Bruce Highway while battling smashed roads in the Gulf.
One size fits all does not work for the bush.
I’m calling on the minister to keep a close eye on the NHVR culture and competency. We need enforcement, not entrapment.
Because if we keep pushing truckies out of the industry, everything stops.
