The Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks — but there’s a lot more to it than beautiful architecture.

Construction began in 1893, and the QVB officially opened on 21 July 1898. Today, it’s more than 128 years old.

And the numbers are incredible.

The building stretches approximately 190 metres long and 30 metres wide, covering an entire city block. Around 4.5 million bricks, 7,277 cubic metres of sandstone, and 2,700 tonnes of iron and steel were used in its construction.

Its magnificent central dome is about 19 metres across, with the cupola reaching approximately 58 metres high.

But perhaps the most surprising part of its history? The QVB almost disappeared.

In 1959, there were plans to demolish it and replace it with a civic square and underground car park.

Thankfully, that never happened. After major restoration, the QVB reopened in 1986 and remains one of Sydney’s most treasured buildings.

And there’s one more fascinating detail — a sealed letter from Queen Elizabeth II is hidden inside, with instructions that it should not be opened until 2085.

Today, the QVB has four main retail levels and more than 170 shops, boutiques, cafés and dining experiences.

So next time you walk through the QVB, look beyond the shops. Look up and take in the history of this incredible Sydney landmark.

A private tour should be more than just getting from one tourist spot to another.

At Rocky Road Tours & Travels, we don’t just drive you around Sydney and point out the sights. Our guides provide live commentary throughout the journey, sharing local knowledge, Australian history, stories, culture, and the little details you might otherwise miss.

From the moment we pick you up, your tour has already started.

We explain what you’re seeing, tell you the stories behind the places you visit, answer your questions, and give you a more personal understanding of Sydney and Australia.

That’s the difference between just hiring a driver and experiencing a guided private tour.

You’re not simply being transported — you’re being guided, informed and looked after.

Private. Personal. Informative. No big buses. No rushing.

Experience Sydney with a team that does more than just drive you around.

Martin Place is one of the most historic public spaces in the heart of Sydney. Originally known as Moore Street, it started as a narrow street before being transformed into the wide open space we see today. It was later named after Sir James Martin, a former Premier of New South Wales and Chief Justice.

Over the years, Martin Place has been used for major celebrations, public gatherings, protests and important moments in Sydney’s history. Today, it remains an important meeting place surrounded by some of the city’s beautiful historic buildings.

You may also recognise Martin Place from the movies, including The Matrix, Superman Returns and The Fall Guy.

Want to see Sydney beyond the usual tourist spots? Book your private Sydney tour with Rocky Road Tours & Travels and discover the stories, history and hidden details that make this city so special. Get in touch today and let’s explore Sydney together!

A place of remembrance in the heart of Sydney.

The ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park is more than a beautiful historic building. It tells the stories of the Australians who served, the families who waited for them, and the sacrifices made during times of war.

From the Eternal Flame to the soil representing the places they called home and the battlefields where they served, every part of this memorial carries a story.

Lest we forget.
