The pilots sound very observent, AI hope she misses the plane.
A woman stepped in front of my elderly father at airport security and addressed him as "grandpa." This incident caught the attention of two pilots, who stopped right away.
My father, 81 years old, had not flown in almost twenty years.
With his agreement to travel to my daughter's wedding in Denver, I made a point to remain with him throughout the trip.
The security line was full.
Slowly, dad made his way forward, leaning on his cane and attempting to shed his jacket.
It was then that a woman in costly businesswear entered the line in front of him.
"We're all going to miss our flights waiting for Grandpa."
Dad resignedly stepped back.
I felt enraged.
"Excuse me. He was ahead of you."
She dismissed me with a roll of her eyes.
"Then Grandpa should learn how airports work."
Dad pressed my arm.
"Let it go."
Unexpectedly, two pilots in uniform halted as they passed.
They both fixed their gaze on Dad.
One leaned over and whispered to his colleague.
Both turned and returned.
The eldest pilot approached unhurriedly.
"Sir... is your name Thomas?"
A change came over Dad's face.
"Yes."
Both pilots promptly took off their caps.
The woman scoffed.
"What, is Grandpa famous?"
The pilots gave her no attention.
The older one looked closely at the silver wings on Dad's jacket.
"I haven't seen those in thirty-four years."
A tightening sensation began in my stomach.
Dad had always just said he did airport maintenance until retirement.
No more than that.
A security supervisor rushed over, stopped upon seeing Dad.
Within a short time, we were led from the queue.
"Dad, what's happening?"
He wasn't forthcoming.
The older pilot led us to a restricted door, and before he opened it, Dad grabbed his wrist.
