For Bellfield airport pickups, we plan the job properly before the driver arrives. That means allowing for the Chandler Highway, Eastern Freeway and Tulla traffic, matching the vehicle to your group, and adding baby capsules, child seats or boosters if you ask when booking.

Last school holidays, my sister's family nearly missed their flight out of Tullamarine because they tried to fit six people, four suitcases, and a pram into two sedans from Sassafras.

One car left early. The other got stuck behind a truck on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. They made it, barely, with zero margin and a lot of stress.

We do this run regularly. Sassafras to the airport, around 57 minutes in light traffic, $160 to $185 on the meter with tolls already included. One booking, one driver, everyone in the same vehicle.

If you've got a family trip, a wedding at one of the Ranges venues, or a group heading into Box Hill for the day, one maxi cab is genuinely the easier call.

Most people think the hard bit is finding a cab after the last race. From Montmorency, the pain can start earlier: hilly streets near Petrie Park, everyone meeting at different corners, and cars circling for racecourse parking.
