My very first taste of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon was at an International Cabernet tasting organised by Cape Mentelle, back when I’d just started working there.

One of the handful of wines in my life that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. That intensity of fruit, its purity, and then this perfectly integrated structure and tannin that just made everything feel inevitable. I remember thinking: this is what new world Cabernet can be.

Fast forward to now, and I’m bringing guests through Moss Wood’s winery on private tours, hearing the stories behind the philosophy, walking the property, understanding why these wines taste the way they do. Suddenly it all clicks.
If you’ve ever wanted to understand what makes Margaret River Cabernet truly special, this is where it begins. 🍷

When I started Bonjour Margaret River earlier this year, I had no idea how quickly it would feel real. But watching it come to life, tour by tour, guest by guest, has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

These reviews mean everything to me. Not just because they help the business grow, but because they tell me that what I set out to do (share my genuine love for this region, its wines, and its stories)is actually landing with people.

Sixteen years in Margaret River. Twelve of them at Cape Mentelle. Every tour I lead draws on all of it, and knowing that guests feel that difference makes every early morning and late night worth it.

If you’ve taken a tour with me this year, Thank you from the bottom of my heart. 🙏🍷
And if you’ve been thinking about booking, there’s no better time. The region is stunning right now and I’d love to show you why I never left.

That’s Margaret River in a nutshell, the world’s best in the spotlight, and something just as raw happening right next door.

When I’m not guiding you through Margaret River’s finest cellars, you’ll find me out here. Salt air, soft light, and a camera pointing at the ocean 🌊

16 years of watching these waves. It never gets old.

The coast is never far from the vines down here. That’s what makes this place something else.

🍇 Veraison is well underway in Margaret River’s vineyards.
This magical transition marks the moment when grapes shift from hard, green berries to their final ripening colors. Red varieties blush with deep purples and blues, while white grapes turn translucent and golden.
For winemakers, veraison signals the countdown to vintage. But it’s more than just a timeline; it’s when the vines redirect their energy from growth to ripening, and sugars begin their slow accumulation in the fruit.
Walking through the rows right now, you’ll see this transformation happening berry by berry, cluster by cluster. Some varietals are ahead of others with Chardonnay often leading the way, while Cabernet Sauvignon takes its time.
It’s one of the most photogenic moments in the wine year, and a reminder of why we’re so connected to the rhythms of the vineyard here in Margaret River.

🍷 Curious about what happens behind the scenes during vintage? Join us for a private tour and tasting to see (and taste) the magic firsthand.

Did you know the Margaret River is only 60 kilometers long?

This modest waterway was called Wooditchup by the Wadandi people - named after Wooditch, an ancestral spirit who carved the river’s path during the Nyitting (Dreaming). When European settler John Garrett Bussell arrived in the 1830s, he renamed it after Margaret Whicher, possibly a childhood sweetheart back in England.

Flowing from the Whicher Range through ancient karri forests and limestone caves, the river is home to the hairy marron, the third-largest freshwater crayfish in the world, found nowhere else on Earth. These critically endangered creatures can grow up to 40cm long and are covered in distinctive hair-like tufts.

Why Margaret River vineyards disappear under nets each vintage 🍇🦜

As véraison approaches and grapes begin ripening, you’ll see vineyards across the region transformed by protective netting. It’s not just for show, it’s essential protection against one of the winemaker’s biggest challenges: silvereyes.
These tiny birds travel in massive flocks during harvest season, and despite their delicate appearance, they’re ruthless. A single flock can devastate an unprotected vineyard in hours, pecking holes in grapes that then split, rot, and attract insects. What they don’t eat, they ruin.
Ravens, parrots, and starlings add to the pressure, but silvereyes are the real concern. They are small enough to slip through gaps, traveling in numbers that can strip entire rows before the sun sets.
The solution? Kilometres of carefully draped netting that protects months of meticulous vineyard work. It’s labor-intensive, costly, and essential. Without it, there’s simply no harvest.
Next time you see those ghostly white rows stretching across the landscape, you’re witnessing the quiet, unglamorous work that ensures your glass of Margaret River wine makes it from vine to bottle.
