End of an era “47 years” Kev and Jan would like to say a big thank you to all for the kind words shared in this past week. It is going to be a big adjustment but they are excited for their next chapter. To all our staff past and present, servicing our community would not have been possible without you commitment. To our Tablelands families, it has been an honour to have you entrust us with transporting your children around safely. Lastly to the schools thank you for allowing us to be a part of your students educational journey. How lucky are we to get the most beautiful tribute from Malanda State School, thank you.

We look forward to assisting Trans North Bus and Coach, another family run operation in a smooth transition. No change to any School services, all will remain the same. This is also the case for all booked charters, next week and in the future.

The past couple of years have been tough on the Savannahlander.

We've been impacted by record floods, intense wet seasons, bush fires, vandalism and an ageing railway.

We were really hoping that 2025 was going to be when things started getting better for us but it doesn't seem to be over yet.

We have been informed by Queensland Rail that there is damage to several of the railway bridges between Kuranda and Mareeba making it currently unsafe for us to travel over.

It is expected to take around 6 months to repair the line. I know, not good news at all, but please bear with me.

We are trying our best to work around this and currently working on a plan that is yet to be finalised, but this is what we're thinking.

We want to pack up all three Railmotors, throw them on the back of a truck (good thing I've got HUGE muscles💪) and relocate them to Mareeba so that we can start the trip from there.

This will mean that if you're travelling with us during this period, you will be transported by coach between Cairns and Mareeba.

Now moving a train by truck is no easy feat so will take a few weeks to prepare and accomplish, meaning that we have had to cancel the first 5 trips of the year (those passengers impacted have been notified).

At this stage we are hoping to start our season on April 9th but like I said, our plan is yet to be finalised and given approval by the relevant government departments which may take a week or two.

So this is where we are at this point in time. Things may change that are out of our control. Especially as our wet season isn't over yet, but we will update you all with more information when we get it.

We ask for your patience and not to call the office asking for more information because firstly, we just don't have it and secondly, the admin team are working hard trying to sort everything out as quickly as possible.

And the only other favour I'd ask of you, is that if you're booked to travel with us this season, please do despite the changes in the service. The Savannahlander needs your support now more than ever and we're looking forward to seeing you on board and giving you one hell of a good time on the best damn outback rail experience in Australia.

Malanda Show kicks off on Friday the 5th of July with a spectacular list of events.

Friday evening will be the ever-popular Ergon Energy Street parade. The street procession is always a definite highlight of the Malanda Show. What better way to commence the weekend’s festivities than having a street party, right?!

The theme for the 2024 Street Parade is SPACE. We encourage all sorts of vehicles from vintage to machinery, as well as elaborate costumes, walking processions, marching bands, decorated bikes and, of course, those wonderfully creative floats.

For 2024 the Elders Insurance Tablelands Rural Ambassador Program will be hosted in conjunction with the show celebrations. Our 2024 Malanda winner will be announced at the official opening.

The Malanda Gymnastics Club inc Cheerleading Squad will be performing at the Official Opening.

Good afternoon Parents/guardians,
Please be advised there is an evacuation notice out for Watsonville area due to grass fires. Due to this we are not able to transport students any further than Herberton. We have arranged a plan with Queensland Police Service, Translink and Herberton Primary. All students that usually utilise our service past Herberton (Watsonville/Bakerville) will be transported to Herberton Primary for supervision until parents can reach the child/children. Our driver will be staying with students until a further update has been made, if the road does open and is safe we will transport students home. If it is unsafe to travel further after the next update, Department of Education staff members will take over supervision of students until you can arrive to collect. At this stage we will still be transferring any students that travel from Herberton to Wondecla on John Waters bus service, to their service.
