Importers, sorry to say it looks like freight costs are not about to drop back down any time soon. Maybe in a few years when all the new ships have been built, or if demand for goods slows down.

Shippers must brace themselves for at least two more years of elevated freight rates and tight supply, according to Drewry. The maritime consultant predicts average rates – a blend of spot, contract, backhaul and regional trade rates – will increase about 23% this year; but for some headhaul rou...

The impact to Australian companies from ongoing disruptions in the Suez Canal are relatively minor and likely to be short-lived, according to Morningstar director of equity research Adam Fleck.

This might seem surprising given the media coverage, and the deluge of memes prompted by the dramatic images of the now-unstuck mega container ship. But Australia’s orientation to Asia, and the increased resilience of global supply chains following covid mean limited impacts.

Of Australia’s top five export and import partners, only one, Germany, moves through the Suez Canal. The rest are in Asia or the US.

“Australia’s trade is primarily transpacific in nature. Europe is an important export import partner for Australia, but nowhere to the same degree,” says Fleck.

“There might be some impact for high value consumer goods or automobile imports, but most Australian supply chains will not be affected.”

Australia’s largest merchandise trading partners are primarily in the Asia-Pacific region and don't need to use the Suez Canal for passage

Shipping from Europe is blocked -

Hi  Did you see what happened in the Suez Canal? Ships are queueing up at 50 per day. If it is cleared in the next 48 hours, there will only be 3 - 7 days delay in shipping, although there could be a knock on effect for further sailing dates. It it takes longer to unblock the Canal, t...

Here is some good advice about reducing freight loss/ damage.

A bit of planning can save a lot of grief, for you and your customers.
Plan for the worst - "How will this go, if it is floor loaded, and overstowed,
will the packaging take the weight?"

If your business ships freight, then you know that expecting a certain amount of damage is reasonable. Accidents happen, and even just the normal vibrations and conditions that occur during transit can cause damage. Still, limiting damage as much as possible is key to preserving your bottom line. Ex...

Sorry importers, but the short term outlook is that shipping costs and delays will not change before July, at the earliest.

Shippers have been told they’ll need to wait through to the second half of the year before any semblance of normality returns to container trade flows. The CEOs of three of the world’s leading global carriers – Ocean Network Express (ONE), Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk – have been speaking at TPM, ...

I see lots of people talking about couriers; some are happy with their courier and they recommend them to everyone and anyone. But One size does not fit all; and one courier is not the best performer in all lanes and services. I see customers getting frustrated with their carriers. Sometimes they are entitled to be frustrated. Sometimes, they have not asked for the right service, or they have the wrong expectation of their courier. My job is to listen to you, about your business, and find the service that's best for you. Couriers, Aggregators, and Freight Forwarders..they are all different, and they all exist for a reason.

If you are importing from United States, you may see delays in connections, loading and Bookings.

Heavy congestion at LAX/LGB is causing shipping delays of 2 - 3 weeks.

New York and Chicago gateways are facing equipment and driver shortages due to the weather.

Work at Container Freight Stations is disrupted because of equipment shortages, leading to delays in receiving and processing freight.
What does this mean?
LCL freight will be the most severely delayed.
When booking imports from USA, stipulate if you want the cargo as fast as possible, or as cheap as possible. There might be faster options routing through different ports.

These issues will not disappear in a month. It may continue for the rest of the year. We do not know. You may have to plan further ahead for purchases, and consider how much stock you can hold.

Notwithstanding constraints on finance and storage, if you can increase your orders, your unit costs for sea freight will reduce. The freight cost of the second pallet can be 40% cheaper than the cost of the first pallet.

If your normal order is 6 pallets, consider booking 10 pallets as FCL

The new normal...it's not that normal
