What is a Traffic Es**rt Warden ?

Traffic Es**rt Wardens help safely navigate oversize loads that are more than 5.5 metres wide and/or over 40 metres long.

Their vehicles have red and blue flashing lights on the roof and ‘Traffic Es**rt’ clearly displayed.

If you come across an OSOM or large agricultural vehicle, accompanied by a Heavy Vehicle Pilot or Traffic Es**rt Warden vehicle, please follow these simple steps:

• Stay alert - you can't always see what's ahead, so it's important you drive to the road conditions
Slow down - seeing a Heavy Vehicle Pilot or Traffic Es**rt Warden vehicle is a warning that there’s something big up ahead

• Move left - oversize loads and large agricultural vehicles can take up more than half the road or may need to travel in the middle of the road to avoid power lines or other roadside items

• Prepare to stop and follow directions - Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Es**rt Wardens are there to provide directions on how to safely navigate the oversize load
If the OSOM or agricultural vehicle is extra-wide, you may need to pull over completely for the vehicle to pass safely. Take care when re-entering the road – indicate and wait until the entire convoy has passed, including the last Pilot vehicle, where present.

Know what to do when it's bigger than you

Heavy Vehicle Pilots facilitate the safe movement of an oversize load by providing advance warning to motorists, managing traffic around the oversize load and providing direction to the driver of the oversize vehicle who may have limited vision due to their load.

The number of pilots varies according to the size of the load or the complexity. For loads that require two pilots, you’ll generally see one vehicle at the front of the convey and one at the rear.

Their vehicles have a large, yellow, reflective sign ‘Over Size Load Ahead’ on the roof, along with amber flashing lights. If they’re escorting a load that’s more than 4.5 metres wide, they will also have white flashing lights on the front of the vehicle.

• Follow Directions

Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Es**rt Wardens are there for your safety! They have the same powers as WA Police to direct you around the oversize load.

It is important that you stay alert and follow their directions at all times.

Watch out ! For Wildlife ! 🦘🐪

Lately our drivers have shared some intriguing stories of roadside wildlife encounters.

One of the best things about driving through Australia is seeing wildlife along the way, but it's important to drive safe

• Be alert of wildlife warnings
• Avoid driving as dusk and dawn
• Slow down in poor visibility
• Communicate potential hazard to other road users

🚛 Did you know that any directions given by Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Es**rt Wardens are lawful and must be followed?

Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Es**rt Wardens accompany oversize and overmass (OSOM) vehicles travelling through our highways and byways, thus playing a critical role in ensuring the smooth and safe passage of oversized loads across the state.

Pilot vehicles are a common sight on our roads; however, you may not have encountered a Warden given they are only required when the OSOM vehicle and its load exceed 5.5 metres in width and/or 40 metres in length.

You might be wondering at this point, what’s the difference?

🟡 Pilot Vehicles are easily recognised by a large yellow reflective sign with the words “Oversize Load Ahead” on the roof as well as amber and white flashing warning lights.

🔴 Traffic Es**rt Vehicles have red and blue flashing lights on the roof and have “Traffic Es**rt” on both sides of the vehicle, with most vehicles also now displaying a blue and white sign with the words “Oversize Es**rt”.

🟡 Pilots are used to provide advanced warning to other road users that an oversize vehicle is approaching and to facilitate the safe movement of the oversize vehicles by directing traffic in their vicinity.

🔴 Wardens are responsible for the management of OSOM moves including preparing a journey management plan, submitting Green Light Corridor Requests, and conducting pre-movement safety and compliance checks in line with permit requirements.

So, if you see the flashing lights 🚨 of a Pilot or Traffic Es**rt Vehicle, slow down, move left, and be prepared to pull off the road and stop if necessary.

Remember, always follow directions given by Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Es**rt Wardens, as the directions are being given for your safety.
