🚖 WHAT MAKES A TAXI OR RIDESHARE LEGAL IN TASMANIA? 🚖
Not all cars offering lifts are equal — and not all are legal.
Here’s what actually makes a vehicle and driver a legal taxi or rideshare (Uber/Oiii style) in Tasmania 👇
✅ FOR A VEHICLE TO BE LEGAL:
✔️ Registered as a Passenger Transport Vehicle
✔️ Correct MAIB class (Category 6) – covers commercial passenger use
✔️ Passed required inspections & safety checks
✔️ Authorised under an Accredited Operator
✔️ Displaying correct plates/signage (taxi only)
✔️ Operating through an approved booking system, such as:
• Uber or Oiii (rideshare apps)
• New Norfolk / Derwent Valley Taxis (call centre or SmartHail app)
👉 If it’s not booked through a recognised system or operator — it’s likely not legal.
✅ FOR A DRIVER TO BE LEGAL:
✔️ Holds a Passenger Transport Driver Authority
✔️ Has passed background checks (WWVP, police checks)
✔️ Meets medical/fitness requirements
✔️ Is operating under an Accredited Operator (not just “helping a mate out”)
✔️ Is logged into a legal dispatch/app system while working
🔍 WHAT ACCREDITED OPERATORS (LIKE US) CHECK DAILY:
We don’t just hand over keys and hope for the best.
We actively monitor:
✔️ Driver licence validity
✔️ Driver authority status
✔️ Vehicle registration & expiry dates
✔️ Insurance & MAIB coverage
✔️ Vehicle condition (tyres, brakes, faults)
✔️ Driver behaviour & job history
✔️ Dispatch/log-in activity
If something expires or isn’t right — that car gets locked down immediately.
⚠️ SO WHAT’S THE RISK USING AN ILLEGAL OPERATOR?
This is the bit people don’t think about…
If you jump into an unlicensed taxi or rideshare:
❌ You may NOT be covered properly by insurance
❌ MAIB may investigate or limit claims depending on circumstances
❌ No operator accountability — no one to complain to
❌ No booking record or trip traceability
❌ No safety oversight of the driver or vehicle
👉 If something goes wrong… you’re on your own a lot more than you think.
🚨 WHAT THE DRIVER RISKS:
Operating illegally isn’t a slap on the wrist.
They can face:
❌ Heavy fines
❌ Loss of licence / future eligibility
❌ Vehicle defect or impoundment
❌ Insurance being void in an accident
❌ Personal liability for injuries or damages
That’s life-changing stuff.
