Have you completed the ALRTA Fuel & Cashflow Impact Survey yet?
Fuel costs hit almost overnight. But payment cycles, fuel levy recovery and financing arrangements are still operating weeks behind.
That gap is placing real pressure on businesses across regional Australia — particularly smaller operators with less capacity to absorb prolonged volatility.
ALRTA is gathering direct operator feedback to build the strongest possible evidence base for discussions with Government, financial institutions and regulators.

Livestock and rural freight represents approximately 25% of Australia's national freight task.
Let that sink in.

Every year, the sector:
- Consumes approximately 2.5 billion litres of diesel
- Travels approximately 3 billion kilometres across regional and remote Australia
- Supports up to 80,000 direct and closely related jobs
- Generates approximately $12 billion in transport service activity
- Underpins $60–70 billion in farm gate value across Australia, into $100B in agricultural output.

And yet, the sector's contribution is consistently underestimated in policy discussions.
That is exactly why ALRTA has been developing an Economic Contribution & Value Chain Analysis, to make sure Government understands what is actually at stake when regional freight is overlooked.
Food security begins with freight security.

The industry doesn't need another conversation about productivity.
It needs Governments, road managers and regulators to actually start delivering it.

Over recent months, productivity has been raised through the Senate Inquiry, discussed through the Productivity Commission, and reinforced through the fuel supply crisis.
But despite all the discussion, very little practical change is occurring on the ground.

Meanwhile, operators are facing rising compliance costs, equipment expenses that have blown out exponentially, and growing financial pressure, all while carrying the responsibility of keeping regional Australia functioning.
The fastest way to improve freight efficiency right now is simple: move more freight with fewer trips.

That means real reform. First and last mile access. Modernised bridge assessments. Streamlined PBS approvals. Longer-term permits. Cross-border recognition.
The solutions are known. The willingness to deliver them is what's missing.
ALRTA will keep pushing until that changes.

The past few months have not been easy.
Fuel costs that jumped almost overnight. Cashflow gaps that don't wait for payment cycles to catch up. Long hours, time away from home, and the pressure of keeping freight moving while managing costs that are harder to absorb every week.
And through all of it, livestock is still being moved. Farms are still being serviced. Regional communities are still being supplied.

That doesn't happen without the people in this industry showing up every single day.
The small family operations running on tight margins. The drivers covering long distances in difficult conditions. The businesses navigating compliance, staffing and customer expectations while fuel bills land before support does.

This industry is essential. Not in a headline way. In a real, practical, food-on-the-table way.

ALRTA will keep pushing for the practical reforms, better access, fairer systems and meaningful support that this industry deserves.
But today, we just want to say thank you.
What you do matters more than most people realise.

ALRTA Executive Director Anthony Boyle in The Australian yesterday, cutting through on what's really putting pressure on rural freight operators right now.

Fuel insecurity, cashflow stress, and productivity gaps aren't abstract policy problems. They're felt every day by the operators keeping Australia's food supply moving.

Read the full piece to understand why the freight task starts in the first mile, not the last.

$10 billion in fuel infrastructure. But will it reach regional Australia?
The Commonwealth has announced a major expansion of Australia's fuel storage and supply infrastructure, a $10 billion program aimed at increasing diesel reserves, strengthening import resilience and improving supply chain continuity.

On the surface, that's a significant commitment.
But ALRTA has one critical question: how much of this investment will actually reach regional Australia?
Because fuel security means very little if diesel cannot get to the operators who move Australia's food and agricultural supply chains.
Livestock and rural transport is not just another freight category.

If diesel doesn't reach regional operators when and where it's needed, the impacts are immediate:
- Animal welfare
- Food production
- Feed supply
- Grain movement
- Regional communities

ALRTA has already approached Government seeking clarification on how much of this additional storage capacity will be located in regional areas, particularly those critical to agricultural production and livestock freight movements.
We will keep pushing until we get a clear answer.
Because the freight task doesn't start at a port or a distribution centre. It starts on farms, feedlots, saleyards and local roads across regional Australia.
That's where the investment needs to land.

Today is R U OK? in Trucks & Sheds Day of Action.
But the message this year is simple: don't wait for a specific day on the calendar to check in.
Ask R U OK? Any Day.
In the depot, on the road, at the saleyard, in the shed. A genuine conversation with a mate, a colleague, or a driver can make a real difference to someone who might be doing it tough.
Our industry carries a lot. Long hours, time away from family, financial pressure, and the weight of keeping supply chains moving. Looking out for one another matters every day.
Take a moment tomorrow, and every day after that, to check in.

We need to hear from you.
The pressure on regional transport operators is real. Fuel costs, cashflow gaps, complex support processes, and the day-to-day weight of keeping freight moving under difficult conditions.
But to make the strongest possible case to Government, we need real-world evidence. Not theory. Not assumptions. Actual operator experience.
That's why ALRTA has launched the Fuel & Cashflow Impact Survey.
It's short. It's practical. And your response directly strengthens the evidence base we take into discussions with Government, financial institutions and regulators.
The survey covers:
- Fuel cost impacts
- Cashflow pressure
- Experiences with the Economic Resilience Program
- Compliance and administration costs
- Practical support measures

The more operators who complete it, the stronger the case we can put forward on behalf of the entire industry.
