📚 Meet Chris Hammer

This month's second featured author is Canberra's own Chris Hammer, author of the acclaimed crime thriller Legacy. Chris describes the novel as:

"An Australian crime thriller mystery. Someone is trying to kill journalist Martin Scarsden, who flees into the outback, where he finds his fate linked to a scandalous woman, a fugitive wanted for a decades-old murder, and two nineteenth-century explorers from a legendary expedition."

The idea for the story came unexpectedly.

"I was watching the television adaptation of Silver. They had a scene, Martin at a book launch, that wasn't in the book. Which got me thinking: what if Martin was at a book launch and something went terribly wrong?"

📚 Meet Sulari Gentill

Our first September author is Canberra writer Sulari Gentill, whose latest mystery Five Found Dead, unfolds aboard the legendary Orient Express. Sulari's inspiration came from travelling on the train herself.

"I boarded carrying all the great train stories, the works of Christie and Highsmith and Hitchcock in my heart. But almost against my will, I spied a new story in the spaces between the old."

The result is a thrilling mystery set on a train speeding between Paris and Venice, with five murders, a missing passenger and nowhere for the killer to hide.

And perhaps most fittingly for Light Rail Local Reads:

"Reading on public transport is a journey within a journey."

Last week, we were pleased to welcome Australian Catholic University (ACU) paramedicine students in training to the CMET Depot for a hands-on practical exercise aboard one of our light rail vehicles.

Using a combination of training dummies and volunteers, the students put their skills into practice, working through a range of scenarios they may encounter in their future careers.

At CMET we recognise the importance of strong partnerships between industry, education providers and emergency services. We are proud to have hosted a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning and practical exercises that strengthen the professionalism, teamwork and adaptability of our future paramedics.

We remain committed to delivering and supporting valuable initiatives that contribute to a safer Canberra.

One is a locked-room mystery aboard the world's most famous train, where a killer is hiding among the passengers of the Orient Express.
