Position statement re wheelchair taxis 13th Dec 2017

While a Kia Carnival is still operating as a wheelchair taxi in Bathurst, our Toyota Hiace wheelchair taxi has been retired due to old age. So, only one wheelchair taxi is currently operating in Bathurst.

All the taxis in our fleet are privately owned and are run independently, on a commercial basis. They receive no direct subsidies from Government. In fact, over recent years, we have found it necessary to subsidise our wheelchair taxis ourselves to ensure their continued operation. This is neither equitable nor sustainable.

One consequence of NSW Government policy, including that of providing a large number of wheelchair vehicles to service organisations (which compete against us and typically do not operate outside business hours or at weekends), is the erosion of the viability of running a wheelchair taxi in Bathurst.

Our operators choose the type of vehicle they wish to operate as a taxi. Due to the unfavourable Government policy environment towards our industry, and the high cost (over $80,000) of a new Toyota Hiace fitted out as a wheelchair taxi, none of the operators of taxis in Bathurst consider it a viable business proposition to invest in a second wheelchair taxi.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this unfortunate situation causes our customers.

Position Statement: personal bookings

Position statement: personal bookings 16th Dec 2017

Further to the introduction of the Point-to-Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016 and associated Regulations, bookings for most point-to-point transport services (including taxis) may only be taken by an Authorised Booking Service.

Previously some drivers have had customers who called them directly to book a ride. Under the new laws this is an offence, unless the driver is registered as a booking service provider.

Bathurst Taxis has been requested to and is now introducing a system where the customers can contact our Call Centre and request a particular car. This will allow customers to have the choice of a particular car if they desire, assuming that that particular car is working.
