Long time member Harry Creamer visited the hangar recently to speak with our club president and donate a headset to the club. Harry shared some memories of his flying VH-WYZ when, like many of us, it had far fewer hours.
“I arrived in Armidale in June 1973 and soon established contact with the flying school and aero club. I held an unrestricted PPL and was keen to start flying. I had permission to hire from my employers, the National Parks & Wildlife Service, because I was required to travel for work all over NSW.
My instructor for check-outs and night VMC rating was Dave Goldsmith who went on to fly for Ansett Airways. In 1978, I received my twin rating with Ed Cianciosi. I remember the many local men who owned aircraft at Armidale in those days. Ian Robertson, first a Piper PA-32R then a Piper Seneca twin. Ron Lockman, first a Beechcraft Bonanza then a Rockwell Commander. Barry Jeffcoat a Grumman Tiger and Alan Varley a Cessna 182.
Mike and Ken Wilson owned a beautiful Beechcraft Baron which I got to fly sometimes in the early 1980s. They pioneered the restoration of the New England Hotel in town. WYZ first appears in my logbook on 7 October 1983 when for some reason I flew it to Moree and back. I went on to log many hours in WYZ, a delightful plane to fly, including trips to Narrandera, Toowoomba, Cessnock, Grafton, Boomi, and even the sand strip at Old Bar east of Taree for a Sunday outing on the beach!
They were great days, now my happy memories. I’m grateful to all those who helped me in my flying career out of Armidale and if they get to read these few words, a big thank you. I’m in the Port Macquarie phone book if you would like to contact or ask the Aero Club president or secretary.
To everyone else, keep flying while you can!
Harry Creamer
