In logistics, using the wrong term can lead to costly misunderstandings. Here are some trucking terms that are often mixed up in North American freight—and why they matter:
🔁 LTL vs. Partial Load
LTL (Less Than Truckload) = Multiple customers share the truck.
Partial Load = One customer’s freight, but not enough to fill the whole trailer. Not always consolidated.
❄️ Re**er vs. Dry Van
Re**er = Refrigerated trailer with temp control.
Dry Van = Standard enclosed trailer with no cooling. Don't mix them up—especially for produce or dairy!
🕒 Detention vs. Layover
Detention = Waiting at a facility past free time (usually 2 hrs).
Layover = When a driver has to wait until the next day to continue due to scheduling.
📜 Bill of Lading vs. Proof of Delivery
BOL = The shipment contract outlining what’s being transported.
POD = Signed confirmation that the goods were delivered.
💰 Freight Rate vs. Fuel Surcharge

1. Incoterms: International Commercial Terms (Incoterms) define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade, clarifying who handles shipping, insurance, and tariffs.

2. Bill of Lading (BOL): A legal document issued by a carrier to acknowledge receipt of cargo for shipment. It serves as a shipment receipt and outlines the terms of the transport.

3. Freight Forwarder: An intermediary who arranges the storage and shipping of merchandise on behalf of shippers. They coordinate with carriers, handle documentation, and ensure smooth logistics.

4. Carrier: The entity responsible for the transportation of goods, which can be by road, rail, air, or sea.

5. Customs House Agent (CHA): A licensed individual or company that handles the documentation and procedures required for goods to clear through customs.

6. Lead Time: The total time from the initiation of a process to its completion, crucial for planning and inventory management.

7. Demurrage vs. Detention:

Demurrage: Charges incurred when cargo stays at the port beyond the allotted free time.
