[02/08, 13:38] Public And Commercial Tra: *Harare clamps down on traffic chaos with automated enforcement*
Harare, Aug 1 – The Harare City Council has deployed an automated traffic enforcement system in a major crackdown on rampant road violations, including reckless driving, bribery, and motorists flouting basic traffic laws.
With vehicle numbers exploding from 10,000 to over 2 million, the city’s outdated infrastructure has struggled to cope, leading to near-anarchy on the roads. Acting Chamber Secretary Warren Chiwawa warned that the new system will leave no room for evasion, targeting offenses such as driving against oncoming traffic, illegal lane changes, and obstruction.
A high-profile pilot at the busy Jaison Moyo and Simon Muzenda intersection is expected to expose widespread violations, with projections indicating up to 3,600 offenders could be flagged daily. Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) continues to record around 500 daily infractions, including running red lights, phone use while driving, and failure to wear seatbelts—offenses that will now face stricter penalties.
Motorists accustomed to bending the rules, Chiwawa emphasized, will soon find themselves facing the full force of the law.
