🚨 Gauteng Roads MEC Declares War on Transport Lawlessness

Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has issued a stern warning to public transport operators: comply or face severe consequences.

Enforcement actions being intensified:
• Substantial fines for traffic violations
• Vehicle impoundment without exception (owners pay all costs)
• Possible arrest for serious offenders
• Strict monitoring of operating licences and approved routes

The MEC's message to operators: "Your vehicle is your livelihood. When it is impounded, your income is immediately affected. Compliance is not only a legal requirement; it is an economic necessity."

Critical reminder: Operating unroadworthy vehicles is a criminal offence and may invalidate insurance claims, leaving operators fully liable in crashes.

Requirements for all operators:
✅ Valid driver's licence
✅ Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) where required
✅ Valid operating licence
✅ Stick to approved routes only
✅ Ensure vehicles meet safety standards

The department urges communities, operators, and motorists to collaborate with law enforcement to build a culture of accountability and safety.

⚖️ Landmark Court Ruling: Scholar Transport is a Right, Not a Privilege
On 17 December 2024, the Makhanda High Court affirmed that "the right to basic education is hollow if learners cannot reach school safely".
The court ordered the Eastern Cape government to provide transport to ALL qualifying learners from January 2025, with strict 7-month reporting requirements.
Yet by late 2025, over 168,000 learners across South Africa still walked long distances or paid for transport despite qualifying for government support.
