North east crater is awake and powerfull again 🤪

December 27, 2025.
This is the paroxysmal activity of the Northeast Crater (NEC) of Mount Etna.
The crater formed in 1911, and the last paroxysm before this event occurred in 1998.
The term “paroxysm” comes from Greek and is used in medicine to describe the peak intensity of a symptom. In volcanology, it refers to the most violent phase of an explosive eruption.

The first picture shows the South-East Crater on April 15, 2025. The second one was taken today, June 4, 2025, two days after the eruption that caused part of the crater to collapse.

There is a dramatic change in the crater’s shape — it looks wounded.

Both pictures were taken from the same spot, at an altitude of 1,650 meters on the North east flank of Mount Etna.
