Driver safety is an important topic in the truck driving industry.
๐ Here are the top five driving safety tips:
๐ 1. Wear Your Seatbelt
Studies show that roughly 1 in 5 truck drivers do not wear their safety belts. The use of seatbelts is not only required, but itโs also the most preventable way to reduce injury.
Get in the habit of always putting your seat belt on every time you get into a vehicle. No matter the distance you are going.
๐ 2. Be Aware of Speed Limits
Speeding can be a factor in any type of traffic accident, as any type of vehicle can crash when going too fast. Because of their size, high center of gravity, and weight, semi-trucks and other commercial vehicles are particularly susceptible to speed-related crashes. Speed limits are there, especially ones specifically noted for trucks. Stay within the speed limit and you will stay safer on the road.
๐ 3. Plan Your Trip
There are all sorts of unexpected events that could occur on the road, but having a plan can make you more prepared.Knowing where youโre going to stop for meal breaks, fuel and rest, is absolutely imperative. As with any skill, the more you practice trip planning, the better you will get at it. If you are a new trucker, donโt get discouraged by comparing yourself to those who have been driving for a long time.
๐ 4. Watch Out for the Weather
Before starting your trip, whether it is long or short, the first thing you need to do is check the weather forecast. That way, you know exactly what to expect. Certain parts of the country are known for having unpredictable weather, but try to keep track of changes and avoid dangerous driving conditions whenever possible.
๐ 5. Always double check your truck
It can sometimes be easy to skip over the importance of looking after your vehicle as a driver, since certain checks can become routine and maintenance might be viewed as someone elseโs problem. However, the best truck drivers are ones who take care of their vehicles.
