For The Other Guy

For The Other Guy A grassroots effort to gather small contributions of money to be given to those in need. No one arrives by limousine. That was heartbreaking. We choose to help.

Every Friday evening between 6pm and 8pm, a group of people get together in a unique pub in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, NY. Generally coming straight from their jobs, some meeting their significant other, some with their children, they come to unwind after the work week. These are hard-working, good-hearted people. They might have a meal, perhaps drink a beer and they listen to a very spec

ial singer/guitarist, Mary Courtney, perform live for them. Mary weaves a spell every week with her historical ballads, love songs and the occasional sing-along pop hit of years gone by. The atmosphere is one of community and the 50 or so people who are there on an average Friday include a core group of between 10-20 people who faithfully attend to share their week's events and laugh and sing together. It was discovered, quite by chance, that one member of that merry band had been joining a local outreach group every Monday and had been travelling to Manhattan where they handed out sandwiches, juice and sometimes soup to the needy on the streets. This has been going on for quite some time without any fanfare or even a mention. It was mentioned only to remark how hard it was when, on the regular route they followed, the people giving out sandwiches ran out of sandwiches while more people were in line waiting. Upon learning of that, a few of the Friday night regulars decided that, while they couldn't solve all the problems of the world, they could do something to help. So, in November, 2013, every Friday they started throwing a couple of bucks each onto a table in front of the stage, underneath a very small, hand-lettered note that read: "For The Other Guy". That money is then donated to the community outreach program that makes and distributes the sandwiches. Every dollar goes to sandwiches. They have come up with some simple guidelines for this "club":

1. Maximum contribution per week is five bucks per person. - It's not a competition and no one's five bucks is more important than anyone else's.
2. Minimum contribution per week is zero dollars per person. - There are some weeks where it's not simple to give away five bucks. No problem, no issue, no one notices.
3. The money goes to the sandwiches. - Not like pouring a cup of water in the ocean where the difference can't be seen, this puts real sandwiches in the real hands of real people who need them.
4. No soliciting of new members to the club is done. - If someone asks what the note and the money are for, we explain what's happening. Then it's up to them to either nod and say, "That's great" and walk away or say, "Hey, can I join?" And either decision is ok with the club.
5. No politics allowed. - People are in need. Period. Between mid-November, 2013 and January 2014 the club contributed over $450. That may not seem like much, but the cost for the sandwiches (counting the other contributions the group gets) works out to be around .37 (37 cents) each. So, in the first couple of months, the club put over 1,200 sandwiches in the hands of people who need them. Through the rest of 2014, including a benefit linked to St. Patrick's Day we put on at An Beal Bocht, the club has donated over $3,700. That works out to 10,000 sandwiches of the over 40,000 sandwiches that were given out in 2014. As of November, 2015, we've donated over $7,000, for over 18,000 sandwiches. So far. As we get together on a Friday night, in our own small way, we give thanks for what and who we have. The community outreach group: The Aisling Irish Center

These are sandwiches which have been put directly into the hands of someone who needs them.

Very shortly we will pass the 50,000 sandwich mark, but that’s just a signpost on the way. We’ll continue, in our small way, to have a positive impact on our fellow humans. All of this is only possible due to several factors:

The community that is the An Beal Bocht Café. The incredible, consistent generosity with which our community embraces the opportunity to make a difference is an affirmation of the nobility inside us all. These are the people who actually are the "For The Other Guy" group.
Their actions remind us that there are an untold number of wonderful people in the world. A finer group of those wonderful people it would be hard to find, indeed. It is an honor to be a part of this community.

The unwavering support of the owners of the An Beal Bocht Café, Tony Richard Caffrey, Dermot Burke and their partner and manager, Bronagh Harmon who provide us with the opportunity to have a home base within the amazing community they have created

Tony’s quiet, behind-the-scenes generosity largely goes unseen, but that foundation is what allows our group to stand. Bronagh’s support and hands-on management of our Friday night events has been instrumental in creating the warm and sharing atmosphere we treasure. Bronagh’s unstoppable energy, innate sense of humor, and laser-sharp wit ensures that, in our multi-faceted, extremely diverse community, no one ever gets left behind, and no one gets too full of themselves. Absolutely no one can escape Bronagh’s ability to expertly (and humorously) puncture those balloons, bringing folks back to earth and back into the fold. One has no choice but to smile, even if it is you whose balloon was just punctured. It is truly a wonder to behold.

Without Tony, Dermot and Bronagh, and their rock-solid support, this would not have been possible. They have our eternal respect and gratitude.

From moment one, Mary Courtney (https://www.facebook.com/MorningStarBand), the world-renowned, incredibly gifted musical artist who enthusiastically supported the concept and is one of the founders of this group. At her weekly performance at An Beal Bocht Café on Fridays, Mary is a gracious, tireless champion of our efforts. Mary’s career has given her a hard-earned, well-deserved place in the spotlight and legions of dedicated fans. This is not only due to her massive artistic ability, but through her heart. Instead of holding the spotlight which she has earned to herself as hers alone, Mary unselfishly opens her heart as to share that light with others. Mary and her celebrity bring invaluable attention to our efforts in the loving community the she, herself created within the An Beal Bocht Café community.

Maureen O'Brien Lehman is the spark that lights the flame of our group. Her practice of doing the "boots-on-the-ground" work to feed the hungry was the inspiration that made this happen and, as a founding member, Maureen’s strength and leadership has made ideas into reality and possibilities into success. No event, (especially "The World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade") occurs without Maureen lifting it from concept to plan and from plan to successful ex*****on. Her ability to gather people together in common cause is as natural as breathing to her and is invaluable asset that has allowed us to do what we do.

Key members Fredda, Vivian, Ethel, Ginny, and Eileen have generously taken on the task of managing the actual collection of the group’s contributions in addition to their participation in the "boots-on-the-ground" work. Their actions and their happy, welcoming, inclusive spirits are instrumental in achieving the high level of participation in our group.

There are many others who, through their individual efforts make it possible for our events to occur and to make this all work. Too many to mention individually, but they are as valuable and effective as anyone involved. We treasure their hearts and spirits.
