🌵 ARE ADOPTION FEES A SCAM? Let’s talk about it.
We hear it all the time:
“$350 for a rescue dog?! I thought rescues were supposed to SAVE animals, not sell them!”
Here’s the thing: an adoption fee isn’t a price tag on a dog. It’s a tiny fraction of what it costs to get that dog healthy and ready for a home.
Before one of our dogs is adopted, they typically receive:
🐾 Spay/neuter
💉 Age-appropriate vaccines
❤️ Heartworm testing
🔎 Microchip
🪱 Deworming & preventatives
🩺 Veterinary exams
…and whatever additional medical care they need.
Basic vetting alone can easily cost hundreds of dollars—before we buy food, crates, medications, cleaning supplies, transport animals across Texas, or treat the surprise ear infection they decided to develop at 4:57 PM on a Friday. 😂
Then there are heartworm treatments, dentals, surgeries, emergency visits, sick puppies, seniors and animals who may stay in rescue for MONTHS.
That’s also why adoption fees vary. A higher puppy or “purebred” adoption fee can help offset the senior whose adoption fee doesn’t come close to covering their care. Rescue is basically one giant game of moving money wherever it’s needed to save the next life.
Cactus Ranch Rescue is a nonprofit. We aren’t making money on these animals—in many cases, we lose money on them. Adoption fees go right back into caring for the animals already here and helping us say YES to the next one who needs us. 🌵❤️
So no, you aren’t “buying” a rescue dog.
You’re helping pay the bill for a life that was saved—and helping us save the next one.
