~OUTDATED~

~Significant Severe Weather Monday-Monday Night~

Significant severe weather is expected Monday afternoon and evening across portions of IA, WI, and MN. I left the higher risk further north along the I-90 corridor near the warm frontal zone because of higher confidence in storms actually initiating. Further south in IA, some capping will be in place, which will delay storm initiation or keep from storms developing altogether. Near the warm frontal zone, multiple supercells are expected to develop during the mid to late-afternoon hours and move east/northeast. Any east/southeast-moving supercells will pose a strong tornado threat as well as very large hail. Any storms that move north of the front will still pose a very large hail threat but no tornadoes. If supercells are able to develop further south into IA, there will be a very large hail and strong tornado threat.

This weather just keeps coming! Please stay safe out there!

You may notice I post a lot of Indiana weather, it’s where we are based out of! If there’s anything specific you would like to see, leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to help out!

Attention is now turned to Tuesday morning as winds will pick up. Statewide wind gusts to 25-35mph seem likely, with northern Indiana having potential to gust to 40mph, perhaps higher.

We are used to the wind by now, but this time it poses a little more of a risk. With all the light and fluffy snow across the state, blowing & drifting snow now becomes a big concern. Low visibility at times may even create what is called ā€œground blizzardā€ conditions at times. This is where snow isn’t actively falling, but snow already on the ground is intensely blowing around.

Plan on wind gusts to ramp up overnight Monday into Tuesday. Some rural country roads may be drifted shut as a result of this wind, and travel may be difficult due to low visibility.

If anything changes we will let you know.

With the upcoming winter storm, travel will likely be impacted on significant levels.

🟧Moderate snowfall over Saturday and Sunday will lead to slick conditions across all of northern Indiana. Expect usual, slippery winter driving conditions.

🟄High impact zone has been placed along and south of I-70 as higher snowfall totals and rates are expected. Plow crews will likely have a harder time keeping up leading to treacherous travel conditions. Travel is not advised through Saturday night into Sunday.

🟪Major impacts are placed for areas south of Bloomington. This is where the heaviest snowfall accumulations and rates are expected. Areas may top 1 foot of snow with this system. Plow crews will likely not keep up, and some roads may be impassable as a result. If you can, plan to stay off the roads completely starting Saturday afternoon and continuing through Monday morning.

Our first call snowfall totals map is planned for release this afternoon. Stay tuned for that.

For those traveling in Indiana today!

Travel impacts today across the state:

North and Northwest portions of the state are in line for high impacts to travel through the rest of today into Thursday morning as roads are freezing over and snow + wind is ramping up.

Further south and east, moderate snowfall is occurring as a remnant snow squall is drifting southeastward. Impacts will become more sporadic as you go further south, and conditions should gradually improve through the day. Still be on the lookout for slick spots due to falling temperatures.

🟄HIGH IMPACT: Travel could be difficult across a wide area of this zone. Expect and plan for significant delays, avoid traveling on major interstates if possible. Snow accumulations between 3-12+" with potential for higher amounts.

🟧MEDIUM IMPACT: Travel could be difficult in localized areas, but not impossible. Numerous delays still possible. Give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destinations.

🟨LOW IMPACT: A lighter snow is expected with isolated to scattered slick conditions throughout the afternoon Wednesday. Plan for some isolated slick spots but travel will still be manageable.

🟦LIMITED IMPACT: No major disruptions expected.
Isolated slick spot or two possible. Travel should be widely unaffected barring any last minute changes

Even if the wind speeds are low, it’s the gusts that matter! Please be safe out there!

Even if the wind speeds are low, it’s the gusts that matter! Please be safe out there!

A 144 MPH wind gust was recorded in Wyoming that’s Category 4 hurricane strength 😳

This wasn’t from a tornado or hurricane… just an insanely powerful wind event driven by a strong pressure gradient and terrain effects. Gusts like this can flip semis, cause structural damage, and make travel extremely dangerous.

If you’ve ever wondered why High Wind Warnings are taken so seriously this is why.
