Houston Pilots Since 1921 we have piloted the port that built the city

The Houston Pilots Association provides pilotage services to all foreign flag vessels and American vessels under register (regulated vessels) entering or departing the Port of Houston, Harris County, Texas, as required by Texas state law. Pilotage is provided 24-hours per day, 365 days per year, in all weather and port conditions, unless closed for safety, for example, poor visibility, high winds, and storm warnings.

Before it was the Houston Ship Channel, it was Buffalo Bayou. ⚓️

What began as a winding, shallow waterway was widened and deepened over decades to accommodate larger vessels and growing commerce. In 1914, the deep-water Houston Ship Channel officially opened, connecting Houston to the Gulf of Mexico — and helping transform our city into one of the world’s great centers of maritime trade.

From bayou to Ship Channel, it’s a remarkable piece of Houston history. 🚢
