Is your dog allowed to move to France? 🇫🇷🐕
France doesn't keep a long list of banned breeds. Instead, French law sorts certain dogs into two categories, and which one your dog lands in can decide whether your move happens at all.
🚫 Category 1: Attack dogs (banned from import)
Dogs without a recognized pedigree that look like an American Staffordshire Terrier, a Mastiff, or a Tosa. Importing one is a criminal offense in France, carrying up to six months in prison and a €15,000 fine. No permit or paperwork changes that.
✅ Category 2: Guard and defense dogs (allowed, with rules)
Pedigreed American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, and Tosas, plus Rottweiler-type dogs without papers. These dogs can enter France, but owners must register the microchip in France's Icad database, keep rabies vaccination recorded in an EU pet passport, complete a one-day owner training course, get a behavioral evaluation, carry liability insurance, and apply for a free detention permit from the local mayor. In public, the dog must be leashed and muzzled.
📄 Why pedigree papers matter so much
A pedigreed American Staffordshire Terrier is Category 2. A dog with the same build and no recognized papers is Category 1. Confirm your registry papers are recognized by France's Société Centrale Canine before you assume they'll carry over.
🐾 Got a mixed breed or rescue?
France classifies by appearance, not DNA. The French government recommends getting a written veterinary assessment of your dog's breed type that you can show to officials if asked.
🏠 Renting in France?
Long-term leases generally can't ban pets, but landlords can ban Category 1 dogs. Short-term tourist rentals can refuse all animals.
Before you book a flight or sign a lease, get the breed question settled first.
