Taxi FAQ 🚕

A viewer asked me: "Do taxi drivers prefer long trips or short trips?"

The answer is... it depends.

Different drivers have different strategies, and it also depends on the time of day and where the pickup is.

Some drivers prefer shorter trips because they can complete more jobs in an hour and collect more flag-down fares. This works especially well in busy areas where there is a steady flow of passengers.

On the other hand, if you're picking up from places with long waiting times, such as the airport, most drivers would prefer a longer trip. After spending time in the queue, a short ride may not be worth the wait.

The same goes for midnight shifts. Since there is a 50% midnight surcharge, longer trips generally translate into better earnings and make more efficient use of a driver's time.

At the end of the day, there is no "best" trip.

Some drivers love doing multiple short hops around town. Others prefer fewer but longer rides.

It all comes down to personal preference, driving style, and the situation at that moment.

Fellow drivers, what's your preference: long trips or short trips? 🚕👇

I needed a quick meal while passing through Sim Lim Square, so I dropped by Co Ba Quan Vietnamese Cuisine and ordered their Spicy Beef Bowl ($8.50) 🍜

The portion was pretty generous, loaded with sliced beef, vegetables, and noodles, making it a hearty meal.

The broth had a nice balance of spice and savouriness without being overwhelmingly spicy. The chilli oil gave it a pleasant kick while still allowing the natural sweetness of the broth to come through.

The beef slices were tender and easy to bite. I also appreciated that the vegetables were fresh and added a nice crunch to the dish.

What I enjoy about Vietnamese food is that it often feels lighter and cleaner compared to other noodle dishes, yet still manages to be flavourful and satisfying.

At $8.50, I thought it offered pretty decent value, especially considering the portion size and quality of the ingredients.

Overall, a comforting and satisfying meal. I'll definitely be back to explore more of their menu the next time I'm in the area.

A viewer asked me recently at the livestream:

"If someone offered you a corporate job tomorrow with higher pay but less flexibility, would you give up driving a taxi?"

My answer was immediate.

No.

Not because I don't like money. We all need money.

But at this stage of my life, flexibility has become more valuable to me than a bigger paycheck.

Driving a taxi allows me to spend more time with my children. I can attend their school events, be present for important milestones, and simply have more moments with them while they're still young.

The truth is, children grow up faster than we realise. One day they'll stop asking you to play with them, stop wanting to hold your hand, and start building lives of their own.

I don't want to miss that.

In my younger days, I was focused on climbing the ladder, chasing goals, and proving myself. Today, I'm choosing a slower pace of life.

Do I earn less than I could in a corporate role? Probably. But right now, that's a trade I'm happy to make. ❤️

A viewer asked me if I think that local F&B businesses are slowly disappearing, replaced by large overseas franchises, especially those from China?

Will our malls and streets eventually be dominated by the same handful of large chains?

I'm curious to hear what others think. What's your take on this?

One of the strangest experiences I had during my trip to Taipei.

For two nights straight, I kept hearing sounds outside my hotel room.

The noises were random enough to keep waking me up, but not loud enough for me to figure out exactly where they were coming from.

Then I realised the room beside mine wasn't another guest room at all. It was the emergency exit staircase.

Which left me with an even bigger question...

If there was nobody staying next door, where were the tapping and walking noises coming from? 🤔

Maybe it was just the building settling.
Maybe someone was using the staircase late at night. Or maybe my sleep-deprived brain was creating stories of its own.

Whatever it was, I definitely didn't get much sleep in Taipei.

Have you ever experienced something similar while staying in a hotel?

I still remember the day my mum looked at me and asked, "Why did you study so hard, get a law degree, build a career... only to end up driving a taxi?"

She wasn't being cruel. She just couldn't understand. And honestly? For a while, neither could I.

When we're young, nobody tells us that life doesn't follow the plan. Study hard > Good job > Climb higher > Earn more > Become someone

That's the script we're all handed.

I followed it. I built a business. I wore the tailored suits. I flew to overseas conferences. I chased the title, the status, the income... all the things I was told would make me feel like I'd made it.

And then life bent.

And somehow I ended up here, behind the wheel of a taxi, driving strangers around Singapore at odd hours.

On paper? It looks like I went backwards. But here's the thing I keep coming back to now.

I have kids of my own. And one day, they're going to make choices I didn't plan for either.

Maybe they'll follow a path I understand. Maybe they won't. Maybe they'll do something that makes people raise an eyebrow; the way people raised one at me.

And when that day comes... what kind of father do I want to be?

Do I ask them why, the way my mum asked me? Or do I trust that they know something I don't yet?

I don't have the answer. Not fully. But I think about it more than people realise. Because the older I get, the more I believe that success isn't just a title. It's not a salary. It's not what people say about you at a dinner party.

Sometimes success is just... peace. Waking up and genuinely being okay. Being present for the people who actually matter.

I may not be earning the big bucks anymore. But I'm a happy man. And I mean that. The destination you never planned for? Sometimes that's exactly where you were meant to end up.

And maybe, just maybe, that's true for our kids too.

This Father's Day, there were two dads at the table. My father and me. ❤️

We gathered at Thachang Thai Kitchen in Bugis and ordered enough food to feed a small army. Fresh oysters, steamed squid, fried sea bass, fried prawns, Wagyu beef noodles, crispy pork fried rice, Thai sausage.

As the meal went on, I realised I wasn't really paying attention to the food anymore.

I was watching my children interact with their grandfather. Three generations sitting around the same table.

Stories being shared.
Laughter echoing across the restaurant.

Moments that seem ordinary today, but one day will become memories.

As I've gotten older, I've come to realise that Father's Day isn't really about the presents or even the meal. It's about gratitude.

Being grateful for the father who helped shape who I am.

And being grateful for the chance to be a father myself.

Happy Father's Day to all dads, granddads, and father figures out there. May your table always be filled with family, laughter, and people who love you. ❤️

It's been a long while since I last ate at this laksa stall at Bencoolen street, so I decided to order a big bowl and see if the standard was still there.

The first spoonful immediately brought back memories. The gravy still has that rich, robust flavour that made me fall in love with it years ago. It's creamy, fragrant, and packed with character.

The prawns were fresh, juicy, and had a nice firm bite. The cockles were fresh too, although I felt the portion was a little smaller than what I remembered. Then again, seafood prices these days are no joke.

If I'm being honest, the gravy does feel slightly less creamy compared to the old days. Perhaps a little more diluted than before. But does that mean it's no longer good?

Not at all.

It's still a very enjoyable bowl of laksa. The chilli adds another layer of flavour without making the dish overly salty, tying everything together nicely.

Sometimes we revisit old favourites hoping they'll taste exactly as we remember. While this bowl may not be identical to the one in my memories, it was still comforting, satisfying, and well worth the wait.

A good bowl of laksa remains a good bowl of laksa.

For the past few years, Father's Day gifts from my children were usually handmade cards with sweet messages and drawings.

I treasured every one of them.

But this year was different.

Instead of making a card, they pooled together their savings and bought me a Father's Day gift. A portable vacuum cleaner.

Now, I know a vacuum cleaner doesn't sound like the most exciting gift in the world. 😆

But what touched me wasn't the gift itself.

It was the thought behind it.

As a taxi driver, I spend most of my day in my vehicle. Throughout the school holidays, I've been complaining that my old portable vacuum cleaner had broken down, making it difficult to keep the taxi clean between rides.

My children heard those complaints and somehow remembered.

Out of all the things they could have bought, they chose something practical that I could use every single day at work.

When I opened the gift, I wasn't thinking about the vacuum cleaner, but how my children are growing up.

They are learning to observe, to care, and to think about the needs of others.

As parents, we spend years teaching our children values, hoping that some of it sticks. Then one day, they do something small like this, and you realise they've been paying attention all along.

I'm incredibly grateful. This gift reminded me that they have kind hearts.

And as a father, that's worth more than any present money can buy. ❤️
