JEEPNEY MODERNIZATION WILL CONTINUE!
Amid some false reports that the government’s PUV Modernization Program will be discontinued, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade impresses upon all that the PUVMP remains on track for full implementation.
In a statement released last night, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) emphatically clarified it made no such utterance that the PUVMP will be discontinued.
Instead, the DOTr expressed consideration for operators of old PUV units that should they fail to modernize their units by July 2020, they will be temporarily allowed -- through a provisional authority (PA) effective only for one year -- to provide public transport service, for as long as their old units pass the roadworthiness test of the computerized Motor Vehicle Inspection System (MVIS) which will not involve any human intervention.
Further, by 30 June 2020, PUV operators intent on seeking a PA while awaiting the modernization of their units are expected to have submitted a petition for consolidation.
The overall direction on modernization is very clear: following the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte, the DOTr, under the strong-willed leadership of Secretary Arthur Tugade, will push for PUV modernization to provide the commuters a safe, convenient and comfortable travel, promote an environment-friendly road transport service, uplift the livelihood of both operators and drivers, and improve the overall road transport industry in the country.
NOW is the time to MODERNIZE.
