*FINGER PRINT FUNCTIONS*
*Fingerprint unlock* on a smart lock uses your fingerprint as the key. It’s one of the most common biometric methods because it’s fast, personal, and hard to share.
1. How it works
1. *Enrollment*: You place your finger on the scanner 3-5 times. The lock captures minutiae points – ridge endings, bifurcations, whorls – and converts them into an encrypted template. It doesn’t store a photo of your print.
2. *Scanning*: When you touch the sensor, it reads the pattern using optical, capacitive, or ultrasonic tech.
3. *Matching*: The live scan is compared to stored templates on the lock’s secure chip. If it matches above the threshold, the lock opens. Usually 0.3-0.8s.
4. *Fallback*: If it fails 3-5 times, it locks out temporarily and prompts you to use PIN, card, or key.

- *Authentication*: Confirms it’s you, not just someone with your phone or PIN.
- *Access control*: You can add/delete individual fingerprints for family, guests, cleaners. Most locks support 50-100 prints.

3. Advantages
- *Hard to guess/share*: Unlike a PIN, you can’t accidentally tell someone your fingerprint.
- *Fast*: Faster than PIN entry, similar speed to face ID.
- *Works offline*: Most fingerprint modules run locally on the lock, no internet needed.
- *Good for kids/elderly*: Easier than remembering codes.
4. Limitations to know
- *Wet/dirty fingers*: Water, oil, or dirt can cause fails. Optical sensors are more sensitive to this.
- *Wear and age*: Cuts, dry skin, or worn prints reduce accuracy over time.
- *Sensor quality matters*: Cheap capacitive sensors have higher false rejection rates. Look for FPC or Goodix sensors – they’re used in phones.
- *Security*: Liveness detection is key. Good locks check for blood flow/temperature to block silicone fake prints.
