At about 6am at Horton Plains, the grass is silver with dew, a sambar is grazing near the path, and your breath shows in the cold air. A couple of hours later, mist often rolls in and hides the drop at World's End.

If you want reserved seats on the hill-country train, book through Sri Lanka Railways' official e-ticketing site, or ask us to arrange them. Second- and first-class reserved seats on popular trains often sell out once school-holiday and peak dates get close.

Unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day, and the carriages can be packed. If those are all that's left, try to board at the starting station.

In Ratnapura, the gem town, the main shrine to God Saman sits above the Kalu Ganga. Saman is the guardian deity of Sri Pada (Adam's Peak), and his devalaya here goes back to the Dambadeniya period.

Its history is turbulent. Around 1618–1620 the Portuguese destroyed the shrine and built a fort and a church on the site. King Rajasinghe II retook Ratnapura in 1665 and had the devalaya rebuilt. Most of what you see today dates from that 17th-century rebuilding.

North of Trincomalee, past Nilaveli, a stone stairway climbs a low hill through the forest at Tiriyaya. At the top is Girihandu Seya, a small stupa inside a round vatadage with a view of jungle and the distant sea.

Tradition links it to Trapusa and Bhalluka, the merchants said to have received the Buddha's hair relics. An 8th-century Sanskrit inscription found here in 1931 praises the "Girikandi" shrine and its merchant founders. Most of the ruins you see date from that 8th-century rebuilding.

Reapply after a swim or a sweaty climb. A hat and a light long-sleeved top work better than a bottle of SPF you forget to use.

Before you see Thiruketheeswaram, you see its gopuram over the flat palmyrah country near Mannar. It is one of the island's Pancha Ishwarams, the five ancient Shiva shrines, and early Tamil Saivite hymns praised it.

Portuguese forces destroyed the old temple in the late 16th century. In 1894 the site was found again, and the present temple was built between 1903 and 1910. The ancient Palavi tank beside it was restored in 1949.

In the late afternoon, herds walk out of the forest onto the grass around the old tank, calves running between their mothers' legs. That's the elephant gathering around Minneriya. As the rains return, the herds start to spread out, so the best park can change from week to week: Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park.

Our chauffeur-guides check with jeep drivers that same morning, then choose the park.
