Kondawattuwana Tank situated along the Ampara-Inginiyagala road, the reservoir and the surrounding ruins serve as enduring symbols of the once-prosperous Ampara district.
Originally built between the 1st and 3rd centuries BCE, the reservoir has recently been restored to provide irrigation and drinking water to nearby communities.
In addition, a pillar inscription from the reign of King Dappula IV in the 10th century AD was discovered near the reservoir. This record indicates that both irrigation water and paddy cultivation were taxed, and that the unauthorized diversion of water was strictly prohibited. The inscription offers strong evidence of a well-organized, state-regulated irrigation system operating in the Eastern Province more than a thousand years ago.
