Venice is famous for being Europe's largest car-free urban area, where the historic center has no roads, cars, or bicycles.

Transportation relies entirely on boats (water taxis/buses) and walking over hundreds of bridges, with vehicles prohibited in the city, forcing visitors to park in designated areas outside the center.

Here are some key details about car-free Venice:
Transportation Alternatives: Everything in the historic center moves by boat or on foot, including ambulances, police, and taxis.

Arrival Point: Cars must be left at the entrance to the city, usually at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto island, or across the bridge in Mestre.

Layout: The city is built on 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges, making it physically impossible for conventional road vehicles.

Why No Cars: The unique, historic structure of narrow alleyways and waterways means the city was developed for pedestrian and boat traffic centuries before cars existed.

Ravenna is more than just a cruise ship port, its a great town to visit, have lunch, and experience the amazing mosaics. Although Ravenna is not as well known as the likes of Venice, Florence or Rome, it is home to an array of stunning 5th and 6th-century early Christian mosaics, built first by the Romans, followed by the Ostrogoths, and then the Byzantines!
