Match Report

Ballyowen Celtic FC v Belmont FC (A), SDFL U12 League Cup 2 Final
SDFL Headquarters, Lucan, Saturday 2 December 2017

Ballyowen Celtic 1-2 Belmont A

Both teams came to this cup final looking for a cherry on the top of successful seasons, with Ballyowen winning the Marie O’Reilly Cup and Belmont clinching the Division 1 league title. Playing at the SDFL HQ is an honour and special experience for all players, even on such a cold, damp winter’s day. Referee Tommy McGuinness ensured all players got full value for the experience, with a full team walk-on, line-up, special words before kick-off and a firm, fair and exact oversight of the match. Ballyowen dominated the early part of the match, with crisp passing and good movement through the Belmont midfield. A number of potential chances were closed down by the Belmont defence just before shooting opportunities opened up. Belmont withstood the early pressure, and started to create attacks on the break, with one ball into the box by Andy Quinn leading to a firm shot by Andrew O’Donnell striking the crossbar and going over. Belmont goalkeeper Matthew Buckley was on alert many times in the first half, with Ballyowen chances pressing in on goal. Matthew showed his bravery to clear a dangerous cross, which resulted in a heavy knock and a stoppage in play. Immediately on the attack at the other end, Belmont’s creator supreme, Patrick Collins, showed his skill, guile and patience to create space for a wonderful shot into the right-hand corner, a goal against the run of play and a 0-1 lead to Belmont.

Into the second half, and Belmont started to raise their game, putting Ballyowen under more pressure and defending stoutly against all chances coming at the defence. The game went through quite a physical period, with a number of firm and honest challenges leading to stoppages and some injury substitutions. Matthew Buckley was again in the wars, with a hugely important interception of a floating cross, another collision with an attacking player, and this time a match-ending injury. The game was on a knife edge, when Belmont broke from defence and swept up the right wing. Winger Leo Murray showed his speed and skill by slipping past the left back and central defender to create space for a low and hard shot into the back of the net. This was the key moment in the match, with Belmont now leading 0-2 and less than a quarter to play. Ballyowen never took a backwards step and with minutes remaining pressed hard to score and bring it back to a one score game (1-2). However, Belmont were able to control possession for the remaining few minutes, and held on until the final whistle to win it. The full Belmont squad joined together for great celebrations, realising they had achieved an historic League and Cup double. The win was all the more satisfying considering the quality of the opposition, with Ballyowen Celtic pushing Belmont all the way again, as they had done in the league all season. The team and supporters of Belmont carried the blue and yellow colours home to Herbert Park to great celebrations and congratulations from all in the club, friends and family, and bringing down the curtain on a very, very successful U12 season.

Park Vale FC v Belmont FC (A), SDFL U12 League Division 1
Rockbrook Park School, Saturday 11 November 2017

Match Report by Gavin O’Donnell

Park Vale 0-1 Belmont A

Belmont arrived to Rockbrook School knowing only 1 match point was needed to win the League Division 1 title for 2017. However, with only the bare bones of a team due to match day withdrawals, it was always going to be a tough ask for the 9 Belmont players on the day.

The game started at a high tempo with much of the action in the middle third and very few chances on goal in the first quarter. Captain Matthew O’Doherty marshalled the Belmont defence really well, and together with fellow central defender Gary Cleary, put huge pressure on each blossoming Park Vale attack through the centre. With space at a minimum on a tight pitch, Park Vale also pressed down each wing, but met with equal resistance here from left back Andrew O’Donnell and right back Freddie Walsh. The small number of balls that made it into the Belmont box during the first half were kept under tight control by goalkeeper Tom Nickels, in his first match in this position all season. At the other end, central midfielder Sean McMahon was pushing the team forward at every opportunity. As the half wore on, Belmont were creating chances, with wingers Richard Sheehan and Harry Cassidy working the touch-line, and crossing to striker Kian Harrison. These front and wide players each had half-chances on goal, forcing saves from the keeper, but Park Vale resisted the pressure. Sean and Andrew combined from a free-kick on the edge of the box, for Andrew to hammer a decent shot just wide. At the end of the first half, possession and territory were relatively even, as was the score at 0-0.

Into the second half, and Belmont turned up the pressure. A number of early corners put the frighteners on the Park Vale keeper, with Freddie and Kian both going close with efforts on goal. The crowd held their breath for one long-range effort from Andrew, which rose just too high and passed over the cross-bar. The pressure was building on Park Vale, and Freddie won a valuable free-kick to the right of goal and just outside the box. The resulting shot led to another corner, which was returned to Freddie and he came so close with a powerful shot that was blocked and cleared. Park Vale too had their moments, winning a similar free-kick at the other end. The resulting shot was finally secured by keeper Tom after a few ricochets nearly saw the ball bobble past him into the goal. Mid-way through the half came the defining moment of the match. Another spell of pressure for Belmont, and a powerful run with the ball, gave Sean the opportunity to shoot from 30 metres out. He struck a glorious left-footed shot towards the left-hand post which curled outside the keeper’s grasp and into the bottom left corner of the goal. Queue some celebrations in the Belmont camp, although the focus was now a lead to protect (0-1). Belmont came close a few more times, with Harry and Richard making great ground down the wings. Park Vale too didn’t let the game pass them by, pressing hard into the final minutes for an equaliser.

On the final whistle, Belmont players and supporters alike were jubilant. A very hard-fought win against a determined and skilful Park Vale had extended the Belmont squad’s winning run in the league to 13 matches, and delivered 3 match points that secured Belmont the U12 Division 1 title. Messages of victory, celebration and congratulations put smiles on many faces back at our Herbert Park home!
