When it comes to moving your horse, it’s not just about getting from A to B, it’s about choosing someone who puts your horse’s welfare first. Here’s what to look for when booking professional horse transport:

✅ DEFRA Certification
Any professional transporter must hold a DEFRA licence. At Foxhill, we’re fully DEFRA Type 1 certified, which means we’re authorised to transport horses on journeys up to 8 hours in length - and always with welfare as the top priority. You can ask to see this before your horse gets on the box.

✅ Certificate of Competence
Your transporter should be qualified to handle horses safely in transit. We hold a Level 3 Certificate of Competence, so you know your horse is in experienced, capable hands. Again, you can ask to see this - and any above board transporter won't say no to showing you.

✅ Fully Insured
Always ask for proof of insurance. If something goes wrong, you need to know you’re covered - for both peace of mind and legal protection.

✅ Well-Maintained, Safe Vehicle
A professional horsebox should have secure partitions, non-slip flooring, ventilation, and regular servicing. Ours also includes CCTV and in cab temperature monitoring so we can keep an eye on your horse throughout the journey.

✅ Transparent Communication
You should always know where your horse is, how they’re doing, and what to expect from the journey. We believe in clear, calm communication every step of the way.

📩 If you’re looking for reliable, horse first transport, feel free to get in touch - we’re always happy to talk through your journey and how we can help.

When it comes to horse transport, timing isn’t just about convenience - it’s a key part of horse welfare and journey safety.

At Foxhill, we plan every trip with care, and here’s why that matters:

☀️ Weather Awareness – Horses can struggle with heat stress during warmer months, especially in traffic or slow moving conditions. That’s why we often travel early morning or late evening in summer to avoid the heat of the day and keep the lorry well ventilated and comfortable.

🚦 Avoiding Busy Roads – Getting stuck in traffic isn’t just frustrating - it can increase stress for horses and prolong time on the box. We avoid peak travel times where we can and use route planning to keep journeys smooth and efficient.

🛑 Built-in Flexibility – Sometimes the safest choice is delaying or rescheduling. We’ll always prioritise your horse’s welfare over rushing to stick to a schedule.

Because good transport isn’t just about distance - it’s about getting the timing right, too. 🧡

📩 Planning a trip? Get in touch - we’re happy to advise on the best times to travel safely and calmly.

It might go against instinct, but research suggests that many horses actually travel more comfortably facing backwards - and there’s good reason for it.

Here’s why:

🔹 Better Balance – Facing away from the direction of travel helps horses brace themselves more naturally, especially during braking or sharp turns.
🔹 Reduced Fatigue – Studies show that rear facing horses tend to use less muscle effort to stay balanced, which means less travel related fatigue.
🔹 Lower Heart Rate & Stress Indicators – Horses travelling backwards often show signs of reduced stress compared to those facing forward.

At Foxhill, our Bloomfields Professional Stallion lorry offers a side facing design with no breast bars and with sliding partitions, giving your horse space to travel in a rear position that’s most comfortable for them.

We know every horse is different - that’s why we prioritise calm handling and a layout that supports safer, lower stress journeys.

Even the best travellers can find long journeys tiring, and knowing when your horse needs a rest stop can make a huge difference to their comfort and wellbeing.

Here are a few signs to look out for:
🔸 Restlessness – shifting weight frequently, pawing, or fidgeting in the box
🔸 Sweating – especially in cooler weather or when the journey has only just begun
🔸 Increased breathing rate – signs they’re working harder than they should be
🔸 Becoming unusually quiet or dull – this can be an early sign of stress or fatigue
🔸 Changes in posture or balance – looking unsteady or leaning heavily

At Foxhill, we monitor horses carefully throughout the journey using our in lorry CCTV, so we can spot these subtle signs early and stop for a break if needed. We also plan our longer journeys with built in rest periods to ensure every horse gets a chance to relax and recover.

Because good transport isn’t just about distance, it’s about recognising what your horse needs, when they need it. 🧡

When it comes to transporting horses, it’s not just about getting from A to B, it’s about making the journey as safe, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.

Here’s how we manage breaks and rest periods to support your horse’s wellbeing on the road:

🔹 Planned Stops: For longer journeys, we build in pre-planned breaks to check horses, offer water, and allow time to settle - keeping their comfort a top priority.
🔹 Real-Time Monitoring: With in vehicle CCTV and temperature tracking, we can keep an eye on your horse throughout the journey and adapt if they need an earlier stop.
🔹 Designed for Comfort: Our lorry features a spacious layout with padded partitions and excellent ventilation, creating a calm and low stress environment.
🔹 Journey Time Limits: Because of our DEFRA Type 1 licence, we are limited to journeys of under 8 hours - so we plan carefully to meet that time frame without compromising horse welfare.

Every journey is tailored to the individual horse, and we’re always happy to talk through our process to give owners peace of mind from start to finish.

Myth-busting: “My horse doesn’t need training to load!” 🐴❌

We hear this often, and while some horses do load easily, the reality is that loading isn’t a one and done skill. Like any part of training, it needs to be reinforced regularly, and tailored to the horse’s experience, confidence, and changing circumstances.

Here’s why it matters:

✅ Different environments = different responses, a horse who loads perfectly at home might react very differently in a high pressure or unfamiliar setting.
✅ Emergencies don’t wait. Whether it’s a vet trip or a yard move, being able to load quickly and calmly can make all the difference.
✅ Confidence is built over time. Regular loading practice helps keep your horse relaxed and positive around transport, reducing stress for everyone involved.
✅ It’s about safety, for both horse and handler, confident loading minimises the risk of injury or panic.

At Foxhill, we offer calm, experienced support through our loading practice sessions, ideal for young horses, tricky loaders, or anyone wanting to build more confidence.

Because loading should never be the most stressful part of your day.
