A busy few weeks on the croft! Mowers, combi baler and stacking squad been busy at silage. A few hundred bales of hay made for ourselves and others about the valley with a few glorious days in the last 2 weeks. Delighted to also be given the opportunity to trial the SKAI Spot Sprayer in preparation for our next Monitor Farm open day. Fantastic piece of kit which will be on demonstration at our open day on the 29th. After taking the hay we had a rejuvenation mixture sown to extend the life of some wader mown grassland in another 5 year scheme. Thanks to Rich at Lethendry with his Vredo Over Seeder for getting it in for us.

Also took delivery of our new 2500 gallon slurry tanker. Slurry is a big part of our system and in the last few years has enabled us to half our granular fertiliser costs with the use of digestate diluted with cow slurry. A 9’5m dribble bar with 800 tyres to reduce compaction making it easier and more efficient to get the digestate on to the second cut silage ground.

Spring update from Auchernack incoming! With the exceptional spell of weather that came with the month of April it made life alot easier to crack on with spring work. Barley in a month earlier than last year and calving very nearly over. Also thanks to Monitor Farms Scotland we were given the opportunity to trial a virtual fencing technology from Norwegian company Monil. A very easy to use and after nearly a month in use, a very effective way to manage cattle to utilise greener areas of rough pasture not normally available to us. Monil will be present at our next open meeting if anyone is keen to learn more!

A few photo’s from a very wet, and unhelpful end to silage season and harvest. Another difficult year but always an opportunity for trying new things when the sun eventually decides to appear ☀️🌧️

First cut silage in the clamp with a few more acres of bales to do. A few silage jobs carried out for some customers on the contracting side with a brief window of good weather as well. Looking like another catchy season once again! Big thankyou to Peter Smart Contracting for providing the shinny metal and top class service for the last 25 years. Cows also enjoying the good growing season so far with plenty of grass about 🐮
