Recently, Ocean NetLink Shipping (ONE) announced the launch of a new China-Vietnam-Thailand service (CVT) calling at Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Ho Chi Minh, and Linchaban.

Recently the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Jawaharlal Nehru Customs (JNCH), which hosts India's largest port, Nhava Sheva, carried out what is claimed to be one of the largest enforcement actions by the Customs Department to date: the seizure of as many as 122 containerized cargoes from China!

  During the seizure operation Indian Customs detained 122 containers on board a container ship named Wan Hai 513. The reason given by the Indian authorities for the seizure was that the containers were suspected of containing contraband fireworks, electronics, microchips and other contraband from China!

  It is reported that the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) had issued an order to the management of all container terminals and port terminals in Nhava Sheva prior to the massive seizure, saying that it had received confidential information that the containers to be seized were involved in false declarations. The port terminal managers detained the containers at their premises and submitted detailed information, including customs declarations, assessments and inspection status, to the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) via e-mail.

  Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) claimed to have information on the supply of traded goods related to duty evasion, including banned Chinese firecrackers.   While some containers have been cleared, others continue to yield fireworks, misdeclared/prohibited electronic items, microchips and other items.

  The import of fireworks is restricted under the Indian Customs Regulations and requires a license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The seized container was found to be suspected of smuggling prohibited fireworks for distribution and sale in India.

  Sources said that the seized container ship is equipped with Wan Hai 513, a container ship from Qingdao under Wan Hai Shipping.

  It is understood that Wan Hai 513 was built in 2012 under Singapore flag with a capacity of 4,500 TEU and is currently deployed by Wan Hai Shipping on the CI2 (China-India) route, which domestically calls at ports such as Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha, etc. According to the schedule data on Wan Hai's official website, the vessel has been deployed on the CI2 (China-India) route.

Overall, the seaborne container market has developed a new practice of avoiding the Red Sea as a result of the ongoing Houthi attacks this week.

据美联社耶路撒冷报道,周一,也门胡塞武装再次对红海上的一艘集装箱船发动了导弹袭击,这是继5月24、25日对“马士基约克敦”号、“地中海维拉克鲁斯”号和“地中海达尔文”号进行攻击后,针对这条关键海上国际航线的又一次打击。据未经证实报道称该轮是达飞旗下“CMA CGM Manta Ray”号集装箱船。据英国海上贸易行动办公室(UKMTO)表示,袭击发生在也门莫卡海岸附近,并强烈建议在该区域航行的船只保持高度警惕。

私人保安公司Ambrey透露,此次袭击中,三枚导弹瞄准了一艘从吉布提驶往沙特阿拉伯吉达港的悬挂马耳他国旗的集装箱船。

  货运舱单和船舶跟踪数据显示,目标船舶是达飞(CMA CGM)旗下悬挂马耳他国旗的“CMA CGM Manta Ray”号集装箱船,该船原定于周一从吉布提出发驶往吉达。但达飞轮船表示,该船当时仍在吉布提港口内,因此不可能成为袭击的目标。

This U.S. Port Will Suspend Container Operations

According to a number of media reports due to financial difficulties in the United States Port of Portland (Port of Portland) plans to suspend container business in October this year.

Panama Canal Authority Warns: Transit Restrictions May Remain in 2024

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) claims that the ongoing battle to return to normal operations has reversed after a debilitating year of drought-induced draught and reduced transit.

  "Current forecasts indicate that steady rains will arrive in late April and continue for several months. If this remains the case, the Canal plans to gradually ease transit restrictions to fully normalize conditions by 2025," the ACP said in a press release yesterday, adding, "Recent precipitation and progress made in the Canal's ongoing water conservation efforts are turning the tide."

  The ACP's decision to cut daily transit and draft levels has been in the media since last May. The ongoing drought, coupled with the El Niño Niño weather phenomenon, has made the situation worse, with the global merchant fleet deciding to avoid the waterway due to long queues and high tolls. The situation was further complicated late last year when the Suez Canal became a danger zone for the first time in the history of shipping due to Yemen's Houthi attacks on merchant ships in and out of the Red Sea, aimed at putting pressure on a solution to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

  Three weeks ago, ACP added an extra three spaces per day to its Panamax locks, bringing the maximum daily capacity to 27, still more than 10 less than the channel's normal maximum, but a sign that the worst is over.

  Last week, Danish liner giant Maersk also said that water levels along the canal had improved. The company announced that at the height of the drought crisis, the canal resumed a rail-overland service through the Central American country.

  "All modifications to restrictions will be subject to weather forecasts. If rainfall is lower than expected, the canal may be retained or further restricted to daily passage or draught," the ACP warned yesterday. However, moderate rainfall and an increase in the intensity of precipitation is expected later this month, which the ACP said would allow the canal to gradually increase its daily passes to return to the 36 daily passes it normally receives during the wet season.

  ACP also updated vessel operators on the auction price for extra slots, which rose sharply last year.

  ACP claimed yesterday that auction prices have leveled off and are now roughly close to normal levels.

  Transit restrictions on the Panama Canal, which accounts for 2.5% of global trade, have led to a one-third drop in transit tonnage, according to Clarksons Research.

  ACP's latest forecasts show that with the onset of the rainy season, the projected depth of Gatun Lake, which is vital in the center of the canal, will begin to rise at the end of May.

  Peter Sand, chief analyst at container tariff platform Xeneta, said, "We are all at the mercy of weather phenomena such as climate change and El Niño Niño."
