The Redhorse Collective

The Redhorse Collective Collective of documentary makers, videoreporters and photographers in search of forlorn plains. Uncultivated ground. Missions with a mission. In an obstinate way.

REDHORSE makes photo and video documentaries. Because Redhorse is not your average horse. We’re a bunch of documentary makers, journalists, photographers and videoreporters breaking out of their comfort zone. WE TELL STORIES – that inspire. Or upset. About everything, but most likely about human rights issues, current affairs, adventurous, social, cultural or ecological themes. INDEPENDENT BUT TOG

ETHER we encourage each other to greatness. We look for beauty, solitude, undiscovered places. Truth. Contrast. Reporters floating on creativity, that don’t need anything but the world, a camera and a horse, maybe. WE ARE BUILDING A PLATFORM of documentary makers, journalists, photographers and (video)reporters to start up cross pollinations between the people we call the ‘Redhorse Riders’. People who have the same drive as we do, and are interested in setting up cooperations. We actively contribute in supporting each other, to expand our networks exponentially with every new rider that comes riding along. As a group of horses we ride into the same direction, everyone on the horse (s)he knows best. And we make a lot of noise. Want to be a Redhorse Rider? Shout: I want to be a Redhorse Rider! HOW IT ALL STARTED/ THE STORY OF THE TAXI In february 2009 videoreporter Roel Nollet and photographer Bart De Bock went off to the Cordillera, a mountain region in the north of the Philippines, for a documentary on political killings and disappearances. Together with Lynn Heye, from the ngo New World, they form the ‘Redhorseteam’, named after a popular Philippine beer, that – so goes the myth – is brewed by a Belgian recipe. The team quickly gets the hang of it. The documentary is called ‘Taxi Filippino’ and gets nominated for the Concentra Award. A prestigious international award for outstanding video journalism. Meanwhile photographer and cameraman Gieljan van Goethem finishes a roadtrip trough Finland. From Helsinki in the south towards Lapland in the high north, he searches for the essence of a journey; forlorn landscapes and rough portraits. And so Redhorse does not return to the stable. RIDE WITH US – We are open for all your assignments and documentary proposals, as long as we can put our heart and soul in it. We know how to start a fire and get a story told. Meet Redhorse Rider ! Nara is an aspiring documentary filmmaker and journalist, with a clear drive to tell difficult, overlooked stories. She wants to create an environment where people feel comfortable enough in front of the lens to express themselves openly. Her work primarily focuses on minority groups, women’s stories, and human-interest.

For her final project , she created a documentary exploring the mental health of refugees. The documentary focuses on the trauma experienced during their journeys and how they navigate life years later, including the cultural and language barriers they face when trying to access psychological support.

Meet Redhorse Rider Amber Van Cappellen! For Amber, journalism is built on time, trust, and proximity. It’s about being present long enough for people to forget the camera or the notebook and to speak freely about their lives, doubts, and strength.

“This belief shaped my final documentary project, in which I focused on the lives of women in Egypt. Through their stories, I explored how personal experiences intersect with culture, identity, and daily reality. The process taught me the importance of patience, responsibility, and care in visual storytelling.”

Amber is driven by stories that don’t rush to conclusions, but instead invite understanding. She’s naturally curious, socially engaged, and motivated by collaboration and learning.

“The Redhorse mindset resonates with me because it values depth over speed, curiosity over certainty, and storytelling that looks beyond the surface exactly the kind of space where I want to grow as a journalist and storyteller.”

It’s great to have you in the tribe, Amber! Enjoy the ride!

Meet Redhorse Rider Isra Haroun! Isra loves the combination of beautiful imagery and the raw emotion of the human soul. She only just returned from Egypt where she made a documentary about women's rights. Her main interest lies in documentary storytelling and real human stories, so the decision to join the Redhorse Collective came naturally. Isra wants to learn more about how documentaries are made and is looking forward to the adventures that come with them:

“Movement is important to me, but sometimes I need to stand still, observe what’s around me, and learn from it, so I can truly document it.

For me, journalism is about showing reality as honestly and truthfully as possible.

Stories have no borders, just like Redhorse. If there is a story that needs to be told, no matter where it is, they go and tell it. Sharing stories people might not otherwise see or hear is what I believe truly matters.” *** What a pleasure you're part of the Redhorse tribe, Isra! Enjoy the ride! ***

Meet Redhorse Rider Zoriana Khetchykova! A maker and from . 🇺🇦🇧🇪 Her passion for audio arose while searching for human stories that are hiding deep inside people, art and the sometimes surprisingly unordinary corners of everyday live.

“I am always open to collaborations, new projects, and meaningful conversations. I joined Redhorse because I think it has a strong, unique and creative team. This is what I like and what I need."

Let’s create!” *** We're happy you , Zoriana!

NEW RIDERS IN TOWN! We have a whole bunch of Redhorse Riders saddling their horses! In both text and podcast, Jana Van Nieuwenborgh focuses on stories about human rights, women rights and minority groups. You should check her blog about sports too! She has a nose for topics that you haven’t heard about before. “And that’s why I chose to join the Redhorse Collective, Jana says.”

Her greatest skill? “As a journalist I like to meet new people and listen to them. I’m just a very curious and open-minded person, who wants to discover unique voices. Certainly those that are underrepresented in the media. Welcome Jana! So happy you ***

Meet Redhorse Rider Darius Korickij - from Lithuania!

Darius is the ice-breaker type of guy, whose strongest skills are 'talking to people and making them feel comfortable'. As much as he likes talking, Darius is also an empathetic listener, who likes to dig deeper when it comes to sensitive topics.

“I joined Redhorse, because of the way they tell human stories about real people and how they connect with them. I think it’s just the best way to approach 'news'. As a journalist, I want to make the world accessible to everyone and create something meaningful together.” *** Good to have you in our team Darius! ***

We have been screening our investigative documentary ‘The Survivors’ for over 60 journalism students of . Not only did Redhorse reporters and raise awareness about the situation of the girls now, they also talked about how to set up an investigation, the importance of context and empathy, impact and taking risks, building trust, and the gray zones of truth — the fear, the silence and the choices behind the lens. Thanks a lot for having us and for your honest questions!
