Recently, I had to make a decision that, admittedly, has not gone down well with a small number of people locally who have seen fit to take to social media to complain, which is their right, but I feel I need to have a right of reply. That decision is that I have had to take my maxi taxi off the road on Sundays. This was a purely business decision and nothing else.
I have no choice but to absorb rising fuel costs, and it is eating into my profitability. Sundays of late have not been very productive based on my figures. After I have paid the driver and the bills, I am left with very little or in deficit. As someone with a young family to support, this is a situation that I cannot be in.
I understand that maxi taxi services in this town are not as good as they used to be, but this is not a problem unique to Coffs Harbour. It is statewide. Just a few years ago, there were close to 1000 maxi taxis across NSW. That is now close to 600 and may be less now. The main reason is that these are expensive to run, even with government support in the form of lift fees and operational grants. The other challenge is trying to get competent and accredited drivers to drive the maxi taxis. Being accredited is the main point here. If you’re not accredited, you cannot drive a maxi taxi.
I cannot speak for other operators but I am of the understanding that there will be at least one other maxi on the road on weekends or Sundays.
It is better for me to take the maxi taxi off the road on Sundays to protect the viability of my business rather than cop continual losses, which will eventually result in me not providing a maxi taxi service at all, and that will be a far greater tragedy for Coffs locals who rely on me during the week.
If going on social media to make me out as the bad guy makes you feel any better, go right ahead. But these are the facts. No reasonable person would expect a business operator to open up on days that are not profitable. Most people are supportive and understanding of my decision, and I will not be swayed, or be made to feel guilty by a vocal minority with an axe to grind.
